Li Jian doesn't want to wake up in his youth, or he doesn't want to enter an adult world. He creates an idealized myth of youth through the ambiguity of his music, which he transforms into a youthful labyrinth through memories. In the midst of sentimental imagery his music shines like warm sunlight on the rivers of years that have thawed since he transcended time. He and the English poet MacNeice share the empathic experience of a frigid culture, except that what Li Jian plucks is a warm river blowing in the monsoon of youth, a slow river on which it is safe and dear, and he prefers to remain forever in the glow of young life, which takes him beyond the school ballads that make love, friendship, and the schoolyard scene the object of their songs. The festivals of young life of which he sings are the nearest to our dreams of real splendor.
