About 5000 years ago, painted pottery in the Central Plains and coastal areas declined one after another, and Majiayao culture, a branch of Yangshao culture developed in Ganqingning area, suddenly rose and became the representative of painted pottery culture in the late Neolithic period. Majiayao culture was first discovered in Majiayao, Lintao County, Gansu Province in 1924. It is the most important Neolithic culture in the upper reaches of the Yellow River. Its cultural outlook is different from other ancient cultures in Gansu and Qinghai, and it is also different from Yangshao culture in the Central Plains. It is one of the important primitive cultures in the Yellow River Basin.
During the development and evolution of Majiayao painted pottery for more than 1000 years, its cultural characteristics have also changed greatly. Generally, it can be divided into Majiayao, Banshan and Machang, representing three development periods respectively.
Majiayao type (or Majiayao period) is named after Majiayao site. It is mainly distributed in central and southern Gansu and northeastern Qinghai, and it is also distributed in Qingshuihe River Basin in Ningxia and east of Wuwei in Hexi Corridor. Painted pottery in Majiayao period is the most exquisite in Majiayao culture, with curved composition and skillful brushwork. Its painted pottery is rich in artistic themes, exquisite in ornamentation, exquisite in composition and diverse in techniques, which is unprecedented. 1972, a colorful pottery jar with spiral patterns on both ears in Majiayao period was found in Wang Jingzhai Village, Donghe Township, Liangzhou District, Wuwei City. It is a highly developed masterpiece of painted pottery in Majiayao culture. 1996 was designated as a first-class cultural relic by the National Cultural Heritage Administration Cultural Relics Appraisal Expert Group.
