Athletics is the oldest of the sports. Athletics is the cornerstone of the Olympic movement and best embodies the Olympic motto of "Faster, Higher, Stronger".
Athletics is also the sport that has won the most gold medals in the Olympics, so some people use the phrase "if you win athletics, you win the world" to describe the position of athletics in the total number of Olympic gold medals.
