The Italianate (or French) building, which used to be called "Addington" and is now called "Changde Apartment," is mottled, but still stands out from the rest. Not far away is the famous Shanghai Bund, Fengtang Street and Eileen's Tramway (now being demolished). The Addington Apartment was the apartment where Eileen Chang and her aunt lived the longest, for a few months in Room 51 in 1939, and for about five years in Room 60 in 1942. It was here that Zhang Eileen completed her novels Love in a Fallen City, Scraps of Incense - The First Incense, Scraps of Incense - The Second Incense, The Book of Golden Locks, The Lockdown, The Sutra of the Heart, and The Fading of the Flowers. Another important story happened during this period is that Zhang Eileen and Hu Lancheng met and fell in love with each other until they secretly got married. On the north wall are the old wooden mailboxes of the Eddington Apartments of yesteryear, and the bottom box, No. 51, is Eileen Chang's mailbox, on which sits an evening newspaper. Walking up to the sixth floor, the front door of Eileen Chang's house is on the left hand side. The paint on the wall and the door is peeling off, but it does not hide the luxury of the past. Hu Lancheng, who was 15 years older than Zhang Eileen, rang the doorbell for the first time and was shut out. Zhang Eileen usually did not see strangers, he had to stuff a note from under the door. Publishers, magazines, and movie producers at the time also used to ring the doorbell to get their hands on Eileen's hot writing, and Eileen began writing and publishing her novels in Shanghai in 1942, moving to Hong Kong in 1952 and then to the United States. She worked at the Center for Chinese Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and in 1967 she went to England for a time to serve as writer-in-residence at Redcliffe Girls' School in Cambridge, before returning to the University of California. She was an important writer in Shanghai's insular period.
