I am proud to live in Beijing, the capital of China. Beijing bid down the 2008 Olympic Games and every Chinese is excited. By 2008, athletes from all over the world will come to Beijing, China, what will Beijing look like? The Green Olympics is one of the themes of the Games we are hosting. Nowadays, environmental problems have become more and more serious, and it is urgent to protect the environment. Every one of us should contribute to this.
I am a member of the Roots and Shoots team at Wenhui Middle School. Roots and Shoots is a Jenny Goodall Fellowship program that provides environmental and humanitarian education to young people around the world. In preparation for the Olympics, our Roots and Shoots group has organized many activities to protect the environment. Just in April, we participated in the "Recycling Dragon: Recycling Consumables" event. This program is a joint effort by Global Village, Roots & Shoots, Friends of Nature and Hewlett-Packard. The Consumables Recycling Program is designed to reduce the environmental impact of landfills and burials by providing users with an easy and environmentally friendly way to recycle used printer cartridges and toner cartridges.
This program has had a great response from students because it is so relevant to us. The whole school actively participated in the program and learned that consumables are difficult to degrade if they are disposed of in the environment or buried, and that some of them may cause pollution to the environment. In fact, many of the components can be recycled, such as: plastics, colorants, foam, sponges, toner, and various metals, etc. These raw materials can be processed and made into new products, such as: E-wood, recycled plastics, park benches, stationery, and so on. By recycling consumables, it is possible to reduce the amount of consumables that are landfilled or buried, thus reducing pollution to the environment. In one short month, my classmates and I collected over 100 cartridges. Students who didn't use consumables were also actively doing promotional work. It can be seen that the idea of protecting the environment has penetrated into the hearts of students, everyone is doing their part to protect the environment and organize a Green Olympics.
As Dr. Jenny Goodall said, "Every person matters; every person can make a difference; every person can make a difference." And I'm going to do my part to spread these ideas to those around me. I think everyone should start from the small things around them, from themselves, to protect the environment and return a green water and blue sky to Beijing.
