The National Ballet of China (abbreviated as: CBA) was founded in 1959, and it is the only national ballet company of China. It was founded in 1959 by the former Soviet Union ballet master, Mr. P. An. An. Gusev, the former Soviet ballet master, laid a solid foundation of classical ballet for the troupe. So far, the troupe has had the performances of Swan Lake, Giselle, Don Quixote, The Pirate, etc... Giselle", "Don Quixote", "Pirates", "Sylvia" and other famous classical ballets. In the past twenty years, especially since the nineties, the troupe has rehearsed many contemporary ballets and modern works such as "Serenade", "Exercises", "The Last Four Songs" and "The Rite of Spring".
The National Ballet of China has successfully utilized ballet, a western art form, to express the life of the Chinese people. "The Red Detachment of Women" has become a world-renowned classic, and "The Yellow River," "The Blessing of the Liangs," and "The Red Lanterns Hanging Tall" have all become popular preserved productions. This large number of outstanding works has laid a good foundation for the creation of ballet with Chinese national characteristics.
Dai Ailian, Li Chengxiang, Jiang Zuhui, Bai Shuxiang and a large number of other famous choreographers and dance artists have made important contributions to the creation and development of the National Ballet of China. The troupe's performers today are vigorous and moving towards artistic maturity. Under the diligent cultivation of Feng Ying, Wang Caijun and other teachers, Zhu Yan, Zhang Jian, Wang Qimin, Meng Ningning, Li Jun, Yu Bo and others have won gold, silver and bronze medals in important international ballet competitions; and this group of outstanding performers represented by Sun Jie has attracted widespread attention in the international ballet world.
The National Ballet of China has made frequent international exchanges and has visited dozens of countries and regions in the world so far. The troupe insists on inviting famous foreign ballet masters and choreographers to teach and rehearse in the troupe every year, which expands the influence of China's ballet art in the world, and makes the troupe strive to be close to the highest level of international ballet art.
The Symphony Orchestra of the National Ballet of China, in addition to accomplishing the performances of the various dance dramas of the Company, often cooperates with foreign visiting ballet companies. The various concerts organized by the orchestra are also widely acclaimed. The company's stage art department has participated in the choreography and production of many of the company's and foreign companies' dance productions. The National Ballet of China's Tianqiao Theater, built in 1959 and renovated in 2001, is one of the few theaters in China dedicated to ballet and opera performances.
