The five-stringed qin, a type of Chinese guqin, has a long history and ancient shape. The five-stringed qin has national characteristics. It has soft pronunciation, mellow timbre, and low volume. It can be used for solos or to accompany folk songs and folk dances. It is popular in the Bunun, Atayal and other tribal areas of the Gaoshan ethnic group in Taiwan. According to legend, the ancestors of the Gaoshan people played the five-stringed qin to accompany their work when they were pounding rice.
