Literary Figures and Works of the Republican Period

1. Lao She

Lao She (February 3, 1899-August 24, 1966) was originally known as Shu Qingchun (舒慶春), with the character Sheyu (舍予), and pen names such as Jieqing (絜青), Honglai (鸿来), and Feiye (非我). Because Lao She was born in the spring of the lunar calendar, his parents named him "Qingchun", probably with the meaning of celebrating the coming of spring and a bright future. After going to school, he changed his name to Shu Sheyu, which means "giving up oneself", i.e. "forgetting oneself". He was a native of the Manchu Red Banner in Beijing.

Modern Chinese novelist and writer, master of language and People's Artist, the first writer in New China to be honored with the title of "People's Artist".

Representative works: "Camel Xiangzi" and "The Four Together".

2. Lu Xun

Lu Xun (September 25, 1881-October 19, 1936), once known as Zhou Zhangshou, later renamed Zhou Shuren, once known as Yushan, later renamed Yu Cai, studied at Sendai Medical College in Japan (incomplete).

"Lu Xun" was his pen name when he published "Diary of a Madman" in 1918, and it was also his most influential pen name, a native of Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province. Lu Xun was a famous writer, thinker and democracy fighter, an important participant in the May Fourth New Culture Movement, and the founder of modern Chinese literature.

Representative works: "Scream", "Indeterminacy", "The Morning Flower and the Evening Gleanings", "Wild Grass", and "The Collection of Huagai".

3. Liang Shiqiu

Liang Shiqiu (January 6, 1903-November 3, 1987), formerly known as Liang Zhihua, the word Shiqiu, pen name Zijia, Qulang, Cheng Shu, etc., Hangxian, Zhejiang Province (present-day Hangzhou), born in Beijing, China's famous modern and contemporary essayists, scholars, literary critics, translators, and the first study of domestic authority on Shakespeare.

Was in constant pen battles with Lu Xun and other left-wing writers. In his lifetime, he left more than 20 million words of writings to the Chinese literary world, and his collection of essays created the highest record of modern prose writings published in China.

Representative works: Yasha Xiaojiao, Samuel Garden Dream Memories, and A History of English Literature.

4, Bing Xin

Bing Xin (October 5, 1900 - February 28, 1999), female, formerly known as Xie Wanying, Changle City, Fujian Province (now Changle District, Fuzhou City, Fujian Province), , a member of the China Association for the Promotion of Democracy (Democratic Progressive). She was a Chinese poet, modern writer, translator, children's author, social activist and essayist. His pen name Bingxin is taken from "a piece of ice in a jade pot".

Representative works: "Flourishing Stars - Spring Water", "Sending the Little Reader Again".

5, Xiao Hong

Xiao Hong (June 1, 1911 - January 22, 1942), a modern Chinese female writer, one of the "Four Great Talents of the Republic of China", known as the "1930s Literary Lohas". She was known as the "Goddess of Literature of the 1930s". Her birth name was Zhang Xiuhuan (张秀环), but she was renamed Zhang Ying (張廼莹) by her grandfather. She was known by her pen names Xiao Hong, Quiet Yin, Ling Ling and Tian Di.

Representative works: The Field of Life and Death, Legend of the Hulan River, March in a Small Town.
