I say/You are/the April Day on Earth;
Laughing sound/lights up/the four winds;
Lightness/in the light color of the/spring/interdances and changes.
You are the cloudy smoke / in the / early days of April,
dusk / blowing / with the softness of the wind,
stars / flashing / unintentionally,
fine spots of rain / sprinkled / in front of the flowers.
That light/that graceful/you are/
The/crown/of/fresh/hundred/flowers/that/you wear/
You are/the/nightly/full moon.
After the snow melts / that goose yellow, / you are like /
the green of fresh / first / buds / you are /
tender / joy, /
the watery light / floats / the white lotus / that you dreamed / of / anticipating.
You are / a tree / of blossoms,
the / swallows murmuring / between / the beams,
- you are love, warmth, and hope,
and you are / the / April day on earth!
Composition background:
This poem was published in April, 1934, in Xuewen (学文), Vol. 1, No. 1 issue. There are two theories about this poem: one is composed in memory of Xu Zhimo, and the other is composed for the birth of his son to express the hope in his heart for his son and the joy brought by the birth of his son.
Mr. Liang Congzhu said in "Suddenly the April Sky on Earth", "My father once told me that 'You are the April Sky on Earth' was composed by my mother for me in the joy of my birth, but my mother herself never told me about it." Mr. Liang was objective about the poem's intent.
So on the one hand, the poem is a love poem, written for Xu Zhimo, who is already in heaven. On the other hand, Lin Huiyin was a mother with a strong maternal love for her child, and it was absolutely possible for her to write such a light and spirited poem for her child.
