What is the meaning of Broken Bridge?

The Origin of West Lake

Anciently, there lived a loving couple in the sky. The husband's name was Yulong, a simple, sincere, hard-working and brave man; his wife's name was Caifeng, a smart and virtuous woman with a good mind. Yulong went hunting and chopping wood on the island mountain every day, while Caifeng knitted and washed at home.

One day, Yulong went to the island mountain to hunt as usual, and met the Jade Emperor who sent the heavenly soldiers and generals to snatch beautiful women from the earth, and Yulong didn't have the time to rush home, a heavenly river had blocked his way, and from then on, they were on different sides of the world. Every day, Yulong only stood on the top of the immortal island mountain, the couple can look at each other. In this way, day after day, year after year passed. Yulong and Caifeng suffered from the pain of separation, but they still loved each other to the bone, and their love touched the mountain gods in the sky.

One day, the Jade Dragon came down from the top of a mountain and met a silver-haired old man. The old man stood on a big shiny stone and said to the Jade Dragon, "If you can grind this stone into a pearl, you and your wife will be reunited." The old man disappeared when he finished speaking. When Yulong heard this, he immediately went home and brought his tools, grinding the stone night and day. People tired thin, also become old, but his grinding stone perseverance has not changed, no matter the wind and rain, hot and cold, can not shake his faith.

Finally, one day, a dazzling pearl appeared in front of him. Jade Dragon was ecstatic and held up the pearl toward the Heavenly River. Suddenly, a colorful, colorful bridge was laid over the Heavenly River, extending to his feet, and Cai Feng stood at the other end of the bridge, and they were finally reunited.

This incident was later learned by the Jade Emperor, who immediately sent heavenly soldiers and generals to seize the pearl. The Jade Dragon and the Colorful Phoenix swore to defend the Pearl to the death, and in the course of the fight, the Pearl accidentally fell to earth, onto the ground, and turned into the beautiful West Lake. The Jade Dragon and the Colorful Phoenix did not want to be separated again by the heavenly soldiers and generals, so the Jade Dragon became the Jade Spring Mountain by the Qiantang River, and the Colorful Phoenix became the Phoenix Mountain, and they are still guarding the side of the West Lake day and night. To this day, there is an old song circulating in Hangzhou: "The Pearl of the West Lake descends from the sky, the dragon flies and the phoenix dances to Qiantang."

The name "Broken Bridge" comes from the fact that after a winter snowfall, the snow at the center of the bridge melted first, but the snow at the two ends of the bridge stayed on for a long time, making it look as if it was disconnected, and it was the snow that was disconnected, not the bridge itself.
