The tides between the Greek peninsula and the island of Evia are known for their ferocity and variability.
The temperature of the surface waters reaches 24 degrees in summer and 10 degrees in winter. At a depth of 490 meters, the temperature fluctuates between 14 and 18 degrees.
A large number of cold currents flowing from the Black Sea to the northeastern Aegean Sea have an impact on the temperature of the water in the Aegean Sea. The Black Sea currents are less salty, reducing the salinity of the Aegean Sea water.
Biological resources: the lack of nutrients in the sea, so there are few living things. However, the water is clear and calm, and the temperature is very high, which is why a large number of fish swim from other regions to spawn.
Most of the islands are rocky and barren. The northern islands are generally more wooded than the southern ones.
Strategic position: the Black Sea coastal countries to the Mediterranean Sea, as well as the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean must pass through the waters, in shipping and strategic importance. The main coastal ports are Salonika, Piraeus (Greece) and Izmir (Turkey).
