Watanabe's first love, Naoko, was originally the girlfriend of his high school classmate, Kizuki, but Kizuki committed suicide and Naoko was left alone. A year later, Watanabe met Naoko by chance and began a relationship with her, who had become quiet and shy, with a hint of darkness in her eyes from time to time. On the night of Naoko's 20th birthday, the two had sex, but the next day Naoko disappeared.
A few months later, Naoko writes to say that she has been admitted to a psychiatric hospital far away in the mountains. When Watanabe visits, he realizes that Naoko has begun to take on the plumpness and beauty of a mature woman, and that he has met Reiko, who lives in the same dormitory as Naoko.
Watanabe meets Midori at a small restaurant, where she asks to borrow her class notes for "History of Theater II," and grows to know her well. When Midori's father dies, Watanabe begins to date Midori, a junior. Midoriko was the opposite of the introverted Naoko, and seemed very innocent and lively.
During this period, Watanabe was in great distress. On the one hand, he couldn't forget Naoko's lingering illness and tenderness, and on the other hand, he couldn't resist Midori's bold confession and charming vigor. Soon after the news of Naoko's suicide comes, Watanabe goes hiking around in a state of despair. Finally, with the encouragement of Naoko's fellow patient, Reiko, he begins to figure out what to do with his life thereafter.
