Synopsis:
The Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms. This is a period of human desire, quite chaotic, wars between countries for many years, the emperor and ministers of the sinister struggle, and even the various royal families within the father and son, brothers kill each other. When the late Emperor strangely collapses, his brother (Ge You) usurps the throne and takes the beautiful young Empress (Zhang Ziyi), the stepmother of the young Crown Prince (Daniel Wu), for himself. The helpless Crown Prince falls into a rage and is determined to take revenge. The Minister (Ma Jingwu), who covets the throne and the beauty of the Empress, is looking for an opportunity to usurp the throne and take over. The minister's daughter (Zhou Xun) falls in love with the crown prince and gives her all for him. The minister's son (played by Huang Xiaoming) in order to protect his sister and the family, also caught in the whirlpool of strife.
