Wuwei, referred to as "Wu" or "Liang", was called Liangzhou and Guzang in ancient times. It is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Gansu Province, an important node city in Gansu section of the Silk Road Economic Belt, a national historical and cultural city, and a central city of Hexi Corridor approved by the Gansu Provincial People's Government.
Wuwei City is located in the middle of Gansu Province, at the eastern end of Hexi Corridor, bordering Baiyin City and Lanzhou City in the south, facing Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province, across the Qilian Mountain in the west, bordering Yinchuan City, the capital of Ningxia, bordering Hohhot City of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the east and Urumqi, Xinjiang, the east gate of Xinjiang, in the north, with a total area of 33,238 square kilometers.
