In order to realize this kind of imagination, Zhang Yimou moved the Jiangnan Castle in the original work to Shanxi Courtyard. To some extent, it also indirectly promoted local tourism. So the wet cold in the south was replaced by the cold in the north, and the needle hidden in cotton had been bayoneted too many times.
Because the space and characters are very concentrated, which is more in line with the three laws, it is especially suitable for adaptation into a stage play. Zhang Yimou later adapted it into a ballet.
Hanging the Red Lantern is actually richer in image aesthetics and has different charm. Throughout the film are the gongs and drums of Peking Opera, but there is no causal relationship with Cai Feihe's once famous Dan.
Sound stage in the whole movie does not grab the ear, but is expressive and full of charm, such as the thin and stuffy sound of mahjong, the distant and elegant sound conveyed by the flute, and the silence sung by the soprano. Of course, what impressed me the most was the creepy low voice.
At first, the sound field processing of character dialogue sounds like a strong stage, but the echoes that have been buzzing are actually very cinematic, creating a closed and empty atmosphere of the Chen family courtyard.
The ensemble of these internal environmental sounds and external sounds makes the film change very freely between subjective and objective situations, showing Zhang Yimou's attentive but effortless audio-visual ability. The most distinctive voice was brought by Ma Jingwu, a teacher in the performance department of Beijing Film Academy, but it did not appear in the whole film. Only through sound can we shape this old paternalistic character.

Behind the scenes production
1990, Su Tong's novel "Wives in Groups" was published in the publication "Harvest". After seeing Su Tong's work under the introduction of others, Zhang Yimou was inspired and wanted to make it into a movie. So Zhang Yimou called Su Tong and asked for the copyright.
199 1 year, "wives and concubines in groups" was adapted into a film by Zhang Yimou, and it was renamed "Hang the Red Lantern High". Zhang Yimou changed the foggy Jiangnan background in the original novel into a solemn and stirring Shaanxi compound. In order to conform to the visual presentation, Zhang Yimou created a series of ceremonies about lighting in the film, such as lighting and sealing lights, which are not in the novel.
