Some ballet terminology and pictures

Arabesque: (Arabesque) One of the basic ballet terms. It is named after a leaf-shaped flower pattern.

Battement: (Battement) one of the basic ballet terms. A general term for some of the outward and retracted movements made by the leg to the front, side and back. The original meaning is beat.

Ballotte: (Ballotte) one of the basic terms of ballet. It is the basic jumping movement.

Battu: (Batti) One of the basic ballet terms. A certain jumping movement foot with a strike. The original meaning was strike.

Coupe: (Coupe) One of the basic ballet terms. A cutting movement made by one foot in front of or behind the other. The original meaning is cut.

Croise: (Croise) One of the basic ballet terms. A movement in which all legs are crossed as seen from the direction of the audience. The original meaning is crossed.

Chasse: (Chasse) One of the basic ballet terms. One of the basic connecting movements.

Chaine: (Cherne) One of the basic ballet terms. A chain-like continuity of rotation made on the standing full or half toe. The original meaning is chain.

Epaulement: (Epaulement) One of the basic ballet terms. The person stands facing two or eight directions, with the face turned toward the audience. The original meaning is to slant the shoulders sideways.

Entre chat: (Ontrechaux) one of the basic ballet terms. A jumping movement in which the feet are intertwined. The original meaning was cross weave.

Frappe: (Frappe) One of the basic ballet terms. The tapping action of hooking and wrapping the foot performed by the action foot in front of and behind the ankle bone of the supporting foot. The original meaning is to slap.

Fouette: (Fouette) one of the basic ballet terms. Describes the technical action of cracking the whip very loudly. The original meaning is to whip.
