Is smoking prohibited in public places in Malaysia?

Smoking is not allowed in public places in Malaysia.

According to the Malaysian Tobacco Control Law, smoking is prohibited in all government facilities, hospitals, schools, public transportation, Internet cafes, public elevators and toilets. If convicted, the offender can be fined up to 10000 Malaysian ringgit (about RMB 16500 yuan) or sentenced to two years' imprisonment.

The Deputy Minister of Health of Malaysia also announced this year that starting from 20 19 1, all restaurants, coffee shops, open-air hawker centers and roadside stalls in Malaysia will be completely banned.

In the past, the Malaysian Ministry of Health only listed government buildings, air-conditioned restaurants, public transport and parks as non-smoking areas, while restaurants without air-conditioning were not included in the non-smoking areas unless the boss applied for it himself. From 20 19, the Malaysian government decided to expand the scope of smoking ban. If people smoke in the no-smoking area, violators will face a fine of RM 10000 and imprisonment for up to two years, and those who fail to implement the no-smoking policy will be fined RM 2,500.
