[Edit] IX. Musical Characteristics and Evaluation
British pop star Craig David said in 2003, "Jay Chou's music has dominated, and perhaps even changed, the world of Asian pop music."
Jay Chou, nicknamed "Chou Dong" or "Jay", is a singer, songwriter, lyricist, actor and director from Taiwan (Taipei). He has largely elevated the status of lyricists and songwriters in the Chinese music industry, and Jay himself ranks alongside other well-known Chinese music producers such as Wang Leehom and David Tao as one of the most influential newcomers to Chinese music in the last five years. Most of Jay's compositions and vocals are written by Fong, and he is more adventurous than the average pop song in exploring never-before-seen topics, such as domestic violence in "Dad I'm Back", martial arts in "Dragon Fist" and "Double Nunchucks", world history in "Love Before the Western Era", environmental protection in "Terraced Fields", and paparazzi in "Chorus from All Sides", etc. Moreover, he innovatively uses Western classical music in his songs: in "Double Nunchucks" he uses Western classical music. Mozart's sonata-style transitions in "Nunchucks" and Gregorian chant at the beginning of "Blue Storm", as well as Chinese martial arts (e.g., "Nunchucks," "Dragon Fist" and "Huo Yuanjia") or Chinese music (e.g., "The Dragon Fist" and "The Fist of the Dragon"). There are also Chinese martial arts (e.g. "Double-Cutting Stick", "Dragon Fist" and "Huo Yuanjia") or Chinese music (in "Niang Zi", the guitar in the scene is played with the rotating fingers of the pipa; and folk music instruments are used: "Chaotic Dance of Spring and Autumn", "Hair Like Snow", etc.). This created a shock for the contemporary Chinese music scene. Some say Jay was influenced by Luo Dayou and the god of song, Jacky Cheung, to love and create pop music, and that these two heavyweights of the Chinese music scene invariably became Jay's teachers for entering the pop world.
As a child, Jay was obsessed with music and showed amazing talent. His mother, who had been looking forward to his son's success, raised the money to buy a piano for him. "Playing the piano, he tapped into his potential and slowly built up his musical "capital".
After graduating from high school, he didn't go to college and had to work as a waiter in a restaurant, where he was scolded by his boss and had his paycheck deducted. Later, by chance, Jay was "spotted" by Wu Zongxian, the boss of Taiwan's music industry, and entered Wu's company as a music production assistant. During that time, he kept writing songs, the results were put aside by Wu Zongxian, sometimes even thrown into the paper basket in front of him. Finally, he agreed to sing the songs he wrote. However, his songs were too rare and eccentric, and were rejected by many singers because they did not understand them. One day, Wu Zongxian threw him a chance: 10 days, write 50 songs, then pick 10, sing them by himself and make an album.
