The construction of the Chinese Army was at first modeled after the West. The front step of the Guomindang army was learned from Germany, but at that time the soldiers were not trained enough to copy the German front step completely. A big change in this was the kicking of the legs, which only needed to be elevated, not straight out like the Germans, and the range of the stride was shortened.

This reduced the difficulty, so the momentum is down, and in the swing arm, they are swinging left and right, the National Army is swinging back and forth. In the early days of the establishment of the PLA, in fact, there is no uniform standard of gait, in the parade of the founding of the country, the army is followed by the national army's small square step, while the navy's British big fling. After the founding of the country, our army to the Soviet Union as a template, gradually began to customize the norms of the front step.

Copying the Soviet Union's model is not work, because the human race body type is different, the cultural style is also different. It doesn't fit well, and Chinese culture is all about subtlety and introversion. Whether it's holding your head so high like the Soviets or throwing your arms in a line back and forth like the British, it doesn't fit our country's aesthetics, which is considered too arrogant and exaggerated.

For this reason, we have formulated the corresponding standard for the front step according to our own characteristics. When you fling your arms, the forearms are flung to the chest, and the back wall is thirty centimeters from the seam line of the pants. In our army's front step, the foot is twenty-five centimeters from the ground, which is lower than the Russian army's in terms of the height of the raised leg. However, because the legs are taut, the toes are pressed down, the feet are parallel to the ground, plus walking away neatly, the momentum is not weak at all.

Now the armies of many countries have begun to gradually cancel the orthopedic step, mainly because they feel that the training is too tiring, and they may also smash their paws. However, a recent US study has said that marching in a neat, square step can indeed be a great morale booster. In their experiment, they arranged for a staff member to walk down the street and then asked each tester to walk a few hundred meters with the stranger.

In half of the cases, they asked the testers and the staff member to keep the same pace. The other half of the cases were random walks. After walking a few hundred meters, the scientists took out photos of men in a rage and asked the testers to judge whether the man in this photo fought fiercely or not. It was found that those testers who had the two men at the same pace thought the man was weaker, while those who walked casually would state a stronger evaluation.

Scientists believe this is because walking at the same pace actually makes the testers feel full of strength and then will scorn potential opponents. And for soldiers, this kind of marching in formation is known to reduce their fear of the enemy. Prior to the twentieth century, morale for this reason could determine victory or defeat on the battlefield.

And nowadays, although face-to-face engagements are rare, the front march can still play its part in boosting morale. Troops are a group that demands discipline, and marching in a straight line trains soldiers to be unified and cooperative, and it makes sense to exercise a calm and collected mind in a steady pace.
