Sick like a healthy person-Li Songwei (excerpt)

There are two views on diseases: one is that diseases are unhealthy; Another view is that disease is a part of health.

Both views are good. However, I prefer the latter.

The latter is a higher dimensional definition of health. Health is not just a state without disease. People's state fluctuates, as long as the fluctuation range is not too large, it can be regarded as a healthy dynamic process. Illness is the extreme of fluctuation. Is it unhealthy for a person to be alive and kicking most of the time and occasionally have a headache and brain fever? And healthy.

This is not a strange theory, but a longer time scale to measure health. When we say that a person is in good health, obviously we don't mean that this person will never get sick. He may even be asking for sick leave. What we really care about is the whole person, not whether he is safe today. Looking back on his youth, the old man felt very healthy. In fact, he was often sick at that time, but "it's not serious, it will be fine in a couple of days" and he became so sick.

In contrast, the other view is somewhat narrow. Excluding illness from health (that is, once you get sick, you can only be regarded as a "healthy" person), then patients will bear a hidden pressure while recovering from illness: I am in an abnormal state at the moment, I am not the best, and I will try to get rid of this state as soon as possible.

He will be ashamed or afraid of it.

This is almost an unnecessary burden. It is better to let the patient realize that there is nothing abnormal about being sick (or simply say that he is "normal" because he will get sick), then his mood will be different when he recovers. It must be uncomfortable to be sick. However, it is easier to bear if you think that discomfort is a natural physiological stage. As long as you follow some recovery rules (rest, seeing a doctor and taking medicine), you will recover naturally after a while.

After the operation, the doctor told us that if the anesthetic was too strong, it would be very painful. This kind of pain is inevitable, and the doctor can only say, "It's normal, just get through this period." All right, then take your time. This sentence is not a painkiller, but it is a great comfort. What we are afraid of is not the pain itself, but the isolation, self-doubt and incomprehension that follow. "Pain is normal", with this confirmation, even a little pain is no problem. It's just pain. We feel at ease and confident for physical stimulation. Maybe we can consider doing something when it hurts.

"Normal" is a precious gift.

We are not doctors in life, so we can't prescribe medicine, but it is a great help that we can give the same thoughts to those who are facing illness and pain. It's one thing to treat a disease. We might as well give it to a doctor. At least we can conceptually treat the patient as a healthy person. We said, "It's normal, you're just sick. 」

This is just a healthy physiological process. Just see a doctor.

Of course, there are also diseases that doctors cannot cure, chronic diseases. A person may suffer from some kind of pain that medicine can't help, and he will never recover. Unfortunately, it is also a kind of "normality" in a sense. Being normal means being able to cope. This is indelible pain, so there is nothing to be afraid of. Just consider how to accept the existing situation, arrange your life as well as possible and do what you like, right? Can we generalize them into some special health and normality? Imagine a disabled person. When he learns to use a wheelchair and becomes interested in going out for a walk every day, can he still be said to be "healthy"?

It sounds a bit illogical to be healthy after a long illness, but the key is what we think health means. If the biggest impact of the disease is to destroy a person's life, make the patient unable to work, unable to be happy, unable to see the dignity and value of life, and lose the normal relationship with family and friends, then conversely, as long as a sick person establishes a new normal, works and lives according to his own wishes, has a good interpersonal relationship, and feels pleasure and value again, then the only difference between him and a healthy person is that he thinks he is not healthy enough.

Since the difference lies only in the concept, of course, you can change the concept.

The same is true of mental illness. Depression and anxiety, these common diagnoses can be regarded as a mental illness, but aren't they also normal experiences of normal life? No matter the stimulation of the external environment or the disorder of the internal environment, changes will always occur. As long as people are normal, their spirits will change because of these changes. Of course, who wouldn't be sad? Sadness is a normal reaction. A certain degree of sadness can be repaired by itself. If it is serious, it needs treatment, but in the final analysis, it still takes time. It will be better to get through this period.

Everyone will experience this change, which can never be ruled out. Just like when a person is sick, it will get worse in a few days and get better in a few days. Of course, if you get well, you may get sick again. Not because he is unhealthy, but because he is healthy and normal.

If you are sick, get sick. Wait till tomorrow.

Healthy people may not only not get sick, but also make themselves better. This is the beauty of life. Fully aware of this, we will not stick to the performance once a day. Learn to see some kind of stability beyond time in the long run: bad things always come and go, and then you feel uncomfortable, in a bad mood, quarreling between partners, declining performance, great pressure, unable to sleep ... sometimes you feel that "life will never be better", and then the next day you cheer up a little and feel that you can persist.

These are the normal lives of normal people.

So don't be too scared. The most important fact in life is that no matter what kind of pain we experience, we are all alive, and there is a high probability that we will be alive tomorrow ... Living means many possibilities, which cannot be erased by illness. All the people alive are healthy.
