Decoration pollution is the main cause of leukemia in children.

At the beginning of the new semester, Gansu Provincial Health Department and Education Department jointly issued the Notice on Preventing Indoor Decoration and Other Air Pollution from Affecting Children's Health (Note: hereinafter referred to as the Notice). The direct reason for the announcement in Gansu Province is that the prevalence rate of serious diseases such as leukemia among adolescents and children in China has increased significantly in recent years, and indoor decoration pollution is recognized as one of the chief culprits.

In order to understand the overall situation of indoor decoration pollution, the reporter interviewed relevant people from all walks of life.

Gansu Province not only issued a notice in the health and education system, but also wrote an open letter to the parents of students in the province in the name of Gansu Anti-cancer Association and Pediatric Professional Committee of Gansu Medical Association. "Notice" and an open letter roughly pieced together the whole picture of indoor decoration pollution problems.

Statistics show that 50% of children have leukemia because of decoration.

Gansu introduced new measures this time, the direct reason is that the prevalence rate of serious diseases such as leukemia among adolescents and children in China has increased significantly in recent years. More than 60% of children aged 0~ 14 who are prone to cancer in China suffer from leukemia. There are more than 2 million children with leukemia in China, and the number is increasing by 20,000 to 30,000 every year.

The reporter consulted the literature and found that a large number of medical studies confirmed that formaldehyde, benzene and other indoor decoration pollution "main force" can induce leukemia. At the same time, many hospitals have done statistical analysis on children with leukemia, and found that as few as 50% and as many as 90% of children have just renovated their houses before the onset.

In view of the above facts, Gansu Province put forward several requirements: maternal and child health care institutions at all levels are required to focus on preventing childhood leukemia caused by indoor decoration pollution; Encourage parents, school and kindergarten leaders to take the initiative to contact the health department to test the renovated rooms, schools and newly purchased furniture, blackboards, desks and chairs when conditions permit.

It is worth noting that from the content, the above requirements are not mandatory.

Material environmental protection and classroom ventilation are the key points.

The reporter learned from Chen Rong, the principal of Hedong Primary School in Liwan District that Hedong Primary School has been renovating the school buildings every year in the past two years, and the quality control of the renovation mainly benefits from strict procedures. According to the regulations, if the school wants to carry out renovation, it needs to submit an application to the Infrastructure Office of the District Education Bureau in advance at the end of each year, and the whole process is supervised by the Infrastructure Office.

Chen Rong said frankly that with the ability of the school, only good materials can be collected; The Education Bureau is responsible for the overall supervision of the environmental protection of the project. After the renovation is completed, the Infrastructure Office of the Education Bureau will send professional and technical personnel to the school for inspection.

It is important to have free time and keep the classroom ventilated. Chen Rong said that in order to squeeze out as much vacant time as possible, the school always chooses to carry out decoration works such as painting just after the summer vacation, so that when students return to campus, the classroom has been vacant for about one and a half months.

Chen Rong said that this is the unified requirement of the Education Bureau. The school insists on checking classroom ventilation and students' health every day, five or six times a day. Once students have health problems, they will immediately report them to the Education Bureau.

Industry experts

The national standard is only mandatory for developers.

Zhao, director of Guangzhou Representative Office of China Jiazhuang Supervision Association, said in an interview with this reporter that in a sense, indoor decoration pollution is in a regulatory vacuum in China.

He introduced that the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development jointly issued the "Limits of Indoor Environmental Pollutant Concentration in Civil Construction Projects", but this national standard is only a non-mandatory requirement of normative standards, except for newly-built finely decorated houses by developers. After the developer completes the finely decorated house, he must entrust a indoor air testing institution with CMA measurement certification qualification to test the house and issue a qualified report, otherwise he will not pass the acceptance and may not hand over the house.

However, there is no mandatory requirement in the national standard for the more common home decoration and the decoration of public places such as schools and hospitals. Zhao said that whether to test or not depends entirely on the owner's consciousness.

Zhao believes that national standards should be mandatory, and the government should attach importance to indoor air supervision as a special project, clarify the competent departments and avoid multi-head management.

How to reduce decoration pollution? Suggestions from a professional testing institution in Guangzhou:

1. Choose a regular decoration company and indicate the indoor environment requirements when signing the contract.

2. Use decoration materials that meet national standards.

3. Choose brand-name furniture produced by regular enterprises, and choose products with little pungent smell.

4. Do not move into the decorated room or office immediately, but leave it vacant for a period of time, so that the harmful gases in the materials can be emitted with high intensity.

5. Keeping indoor air circulation is beneficial to the emission and discharge of indoor harmful gases. Especially in a short time after the renovation, try to open the window, and the office building with poor ventilation conditions should be equipped with ventilation equipment.

6. Pay attention to the indoor environment of the house when buying a house.

7. Please ask the indoor environment testing organization to test and find out the degree of harmful gases in indoor air exceeding the standard, so as to take corresponding control measures. Slightly exceeding the standard, the concentration of harmful gases can be reduced by air purifiers, activated carbon, plants, etc. The plants can be aloe, chlorophytum and green radish. If the standard exceeds the standard seriously, or the ventilation condition is not good, it is recommended to purify it.

Schools, houses and other hotels have high standards, while hotel standards are relatively low.
