It is found that some indicators of metabolic syndrome can be used as protective factors of death and can make the elderly live longer. Is the current index of metabolic syndrome suitable for the elderly?
At present, the five indicators of metabolic syndrome, including: excessive waist circumference, hypertension, hyperglycemia, high triglyceride and low high density lipoprotein cholesterol, are suitable for adults over 20 years old.
However, the population of China is aging rapidly, and the Economic Development Council predicts that 19 may enter a "super-aging society", that is, 1 out of five people is an elderly person over 65. Therefore, whether the current standard value of metabolic syndrome is applicable to the elderly has aroused discussion in the medical field.
Excessive blood sugar control in the elderly may lead to hypoglycemia death.
Chen Lianggong, director of the Geriatrics Center of Taipei Veterans General Hospital, pointed out that it is not necessarily a bad thing that the metabolic syndrome of the elderly, especially those over 75 years old, exceeds the standard of ordinary adults. Several studies have found that some indicators of metabolic syndrome can be used as protective factors for death and can make the elderly live longer.
Taking blood sugar control as an example, Dr. Cai, chairman of Millennium Love Health Foundation, said that the chronic complications of diabetes, such as renal failure, retinopathy, cardiovascular diseases, etc., all take more than ten years, and only diabetics who attack in old age are unlikely to have these problems. For the elderly with diabetes, strict control of blood sugar may cause the risk of death due to hypoglycemia. The current indicators suggest that the fasting blood glucose of adults should not exceed 100mg/dl.
