Health guidance for parotid mixed tumor

1. Mixed tumor or pleomorphic adenoma of parotid gland is a kind of parotid tumor containing parotid tissue, mucus and cartilage tissue, so it is called "mixed tumor". Mucus and cartilage are transformed from glandular tissue. The outer layer of the tumor is a thin capsule, which is formed by the deformation of parotid tissue after compression, but it is not a real capsule.

2. Mixed tumor of parotid gland should be removed early to prevent malignant transformation. Preoperative biopsy is not suitable, and enucleation along the capsule is forbidden. The tumor, capsule and normal parotid tissue around the tumor must be removed together enough, otherwise it is easy to recur. Recurrent patients are prone to malignant transformation. Facial nerve should be avoided as much as possible during operation. Injection of methylene blue through parotid duct before operation can dye parotid gland blue, which is helpful to identify facial nerve. If the deep lobe of parotid gland needs to be removed, the trunk and branches of facial nerve should be exposed and carefully separated. If there is malignant transformation, radical parotidectomy, including facial nerve branches, should be performed.

3. The only effective treatment for parotid mixed tumor is surgery, but taking medicine is useless. If the lesion does not grow too fast, surgery can be done after half a year.
