Open source movement
The prehistory of the open source movement includes the whole history of Unix, free software and hacker culture. The word "open source" comes from a strategy seminar held in Palo Alto, California in the spring of 1997 with the participation of so-called "pure programmers". Present at the meeting were Todd Anderson, Chris Peterson of Foresight Institute, John Hall and Larry Augustin of Linux International Association, Sam Ockman and Eric Raymond of Silicon Valley Linux Users Association. Their relationship is to find a way to promote this idea, just like people who used to avoid free software. The anti-business creed of Free Software and Free Software Foundation keeps many people away from free software. At Eric Raymond's insistence, they unanimously adopted a new term: OpenSource (open source software) to describe the software they promoted.
1On February 23rd, 998, Netscape announced that it would release the source code of Navigator browser, which became a turning point in the development history of open source software. After a heated debate, "open source" replaced "free software" and became synonymous with open source software by hackers.

Since Linus Torvalds founded Linux, the idea of open source has flourished in the software world. So, what is open source? Simply put, "open source software" is open source software.
Since the idea of open source originated in the computer software industry, computer open source products have a wide variety, a huge number and a wide range of applications. For example, in the field of operating system, Linux occupies a considerable share in the server market and continues to expand. About 75% of the thin-chip servers sold by IBM run the Linux operating system. On the Web side, more than 50% of the world's Web servers are using the open source Apache system; Databases include MySQL, a lightweight database for Internet applications, and PostgreSQL for large-scale applications. The background database of Sina, the largest portal in China, uses open source MySQL database software. Other very popular softwares, such as GNU editing software Emacs, Linux graphics processing interface Xfree86 and typesetting software TeX, have been widely used.
Open source is regarded by many hackers as a cultural revival of computer science, and it is a means for computer science to truly become a science and develop with other sciences. With the development of open source today, not only tens of thousands of hackers actively participate, but also some hardware and software vendors such as IBM, HP, CA, SUN, etc. are also increasing their investment in open source and actively contributing excellent open source software to the open source community, because open source has catalyzed the rapid transformation of the software industry to services, providing new business opportunities for hardware and integrated service providers like IBM.
Edit this open source software and license authorization.
It is free to obtain open source software, but the use of the obtained source code needs to follow the license statement made by open source software. The common licensing methods of open source software are BSD, Apache Licence, GPL, etc. Among them, the GPL of GNU is adopted by most open source software organizations. Open source software licensing models are mainly divided into two categories: one is copyleft and the other is non-copyleft. Copyleft licenses, such as GNU GPL type, insist that modified software based on open source software is still free software.
Since the establishment of 1998 in February, OSI has officially recognized 30 types of open source licenses (as of June 2002). At the same time, the "Free Software License" page of GNU Engineering/Free Software Foundation contains 15 GPL-compatible free software licenses, 2 documentation licenses and a total of ***42 software licenses plus 4 non-software licenses.
