Wuhan Institute of Shipbuilding Technology (Wuhan Shipyard) is a full-time ordinary institution of higher learning funded by the central and local governments and managed by the Hubei Provincial People's Government. It is an advanced unit of vocational education in China and the best civilized unit in Hubei Province. Founded in 1950, the college takes "based on ships, serving the military industry and facing the society" as its school-running purpose and "establishing a hospital with quality and creating excellence with characteristics" as its school-running policy. Over the past half century, it has trained more than 30,000 graduates for China's national defense construction, shipbuilding industry and local economic construction. The college enrolls students from more than 20 provinces and cities across the country, with full-time students 10000. The college is located in Hanyang District, Wuhan, which is known as the thoroughfare of nine provinces-Yuehu Lake in Wuhan New District, covering an area of more than 600 mu, with Hanshui River in the north and Yuehu Lake in the south. The campus is shaded by trees, the lake is rippling and the environment is beautiful. The teaching building, training building and library are modern, spacious and bright, and are ideal gardens for students to pursue further studies.
The college has department of mechanical engineering, Power Engineering Department, Ship Engineering Department, Electronic and Electrical Engineering Department, Economic Management Department, Public Education Department, Adult Education College, Self-taught College, Computer Center Campus Network Center, Modern Education Technology Center and Higher Vocational Education Research Center. At present, there are 30 undergraduate and junior college majors, including 2 national teaching reform pilot majors, 1 national quality specialty/kloc-0, which is the dominant specialty in colleges and universities in Hubei Province. The college has eight comprehensive practice teaching centers, including ship center, modern manufacturing center, mechanical basic training center, electronic basic experiment center, business center, network information center, CNC machining center and computer center. It has 68 companies including shipbuilding, ship assembly and welding, internal combustion engine assembly and maintenance, ship power plant assembly and adjustment, numerical control processing, numerical control programming, numerical control simulation, PLC and automatic control, electronic technology application, modern office equipment disassembly and assembly, electronic product production simulation, computer network, computerized accounting, hotel practice and internal combustion engine performance testing, machine tools, technical measurement, engineering mechanics, mechanical design, electrician, electronics, motor drag and thyristor. The college also has a medium-sized enterprise-scale internship factory. Our factory has strong technical force and complete processing means. It is a designated manufacturer of diesel engine parts in shipbuilding industry, and an exclusive manufacturer recognized by China API gravity (API), which provides unique conditions for cultivating students' practical ability.
The college has a strong faculty, with a "multi-teacher" team with high academic level, reasonable age structure, good ideological quality, rich practical experience and excellent professional ability.

The predecessor of the College is Hanyang Arsenal, the largest ordnance enterprise in the Far East, which was founded in the19th century and has rich historical background and cultural accumulation. Here, Zhang Zhidong, the pioneer of Westernization Movement, was entrusted with the ideal of "rejuvenating the country through industry". Here, Paul Wu Yunduo of China, Xu, an expert on modern weapons and ships in China, and the founder of the weapons industry of the New Fourth Army all left footprints of fighting and life.
