Many people's impression of Fit's first generation GD may be a small red hatchback, and it may even be known after GK became popular. The original code names of the first two generations of Fit are GD and GE. The first generation Fit was developed under the leadership of Yoshiki Matsumoto, the current executive director and director of Honda Research Institute. Opening the European market has been Honda's wish for many years. However, European automakers are best at small cars, and a modified model is not enough to challenge them. Matsumoto is aware of the challenge of this job, but he is very interested in it.
Matsumoto, who came back from his inspection in Europe, began to modify the sketch with a pencil. He found that only the front seat had no traces of erasure. The idea of central tank layout was born. This design also provides space for multifunctional rear seats. Full of confidence, he came to the Honda design evaluation meeting. Unexpectedly, everyone's opinion is: I have never seen such a bad car. What makes the company dissatisfied is that there is no design aimed at reducing fuel consumption, and it is useless to say that the space is practical. They left Matsumoto with the topic of thinking about why Civic sells so well in the world. This makes Matsumoto very confused.
Then the good news came. The person in charge of the engine reported that the dual spark plug ignition system can effectively reduce the fuel consumption of small engines. If the engine is small enough, the front windshield can be placed in a more forward position, and then a shorter front can be designed. With this engine, coupled with the design of the central fuel tank, two design goals of low fuel consumption and maximum internal space can be achieved.
After many revisions, the final version has 86 horsepower and a fuel consumption of 4.3L per 100 kilometers, which exceeds the previous design goal. When starting, putting into gear, braking and releasing the brakes, the car whose body first sinks and then moves can really be accurately described by one word "channeling".
