Weifang Kite Festival (Sports Meeting) is held in Weifang on the third Saturday of April every year, with more than 30 countries and regions from all over the world participating. It is the earliest large-scale local festival in China and has been recognized by the international community. Since 1984, it has been successfully held for 37 sessions, and its mode of "kite matching, style setting and economic and trade singing" has been widely used for reference all over the country.
It is understood that Weifang is the hometown of kites with a long history. More than 2400 years ago, the world's first wooden kite was made and successfully released by Lu Ban, a skillful craftsman in Weifang.
Flying kites became popular among Weifang people in Ming and Qing Dynasties. In his poem Huaiwei County, Zheng Banqiao vividly described the scene of Tomb-Sweeping Day flying a kite: "Paper flowers are flying like snow, and charming girls are swinging around. The five-color Luo skirt shakes with the wind, bringing butterflies back to spring. " After the founding of New China, Weifang kite folk culture has been further developed and promoted. In May 2006, Weifang kite-making skills were approved by the State Council, China, and included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage.
Weifang International Kite Fair is a comprehensive international event integrating kite-flying, culture, tourism and investment promotion.
The 38th Session: "Kites are connected with the heart of the world"
The 38th Weifang International Kite Fair will be held in Weifang Binhai International Kite Flying Field from April 6 to 7, 2026. The theme of this year's International Kite Festival is "Kite"
"World Heart Connected", from April 17 to May 5, includes theme activities, economic and trade activities and cultural and sports activities.
The mascot of the 38th Weifang International Kite Fair is "Flash".
It is understood that the design concept of "Flash", the mascot of this International Kite Club, is that in China, the dragon is a Swiss beast and a totem of the Chinese nation, which is full of brave, tenacious and enterprising spirit, and the "Dragon Centipede" kite is one of the representative works of Weifang kites and a national intangible cultural heritage. The design takes "dragon head centipede" as the main element, and combines with Weifang New Year pictures dolls to create a shining image full of vitality, confidence and strength.
