The Department of Life Sciences has three undergraduate majors in biological sciences, biotechnology and aquaculture. Main research directions: modern biological separation and analysis, modernization of traditional Chinese medicine, resources and environment, aquaculture, animal and plant protection and immunity, plant tissue culture, etc. The Department of Life Sciences has more than 1,000 square meters of basic teaching laboratories of zoology, botany, biochemistry, animal physiology, plant physiology, genetics, microbiology and so on. The laboratories are well-equipped with ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer, photographic biomicroscope, inverted biomicroscope, automatic nucleic acid-protein separation and chromatography, enzyme labeling, automatic autoclave, ultra-high-speed freezing centrifuge, light incubator, biochemical incubator, constant-temperature oscillating incubator, ultra-clean bench, snowflake ice machine, frozen paraffin slicer, biological skills signal acquisition, analysis and processing system, etc. The Department of Life Sciences has set up a complete set of precision instruments and equipment, which is worth about RMB 2 million. In 2008, more than 4.6 million yuan of Spanish loans for the purchase of large instruments and equipment were put in place. The complete laboratories and advanced instruments and equipments meet the needs of teaching and set up a platform for scientific research. The Department of Life Sciences trains students to have a broad and solid basic knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry, master the basic theories and basic technology of life sciences, and have strong scientific practice and innovation ability. They systematically study zoology, botany, microbiology, ecology, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, evolutionary and developmental biology, genomics, bioinformatics and other courses. By opening laboratories, teaching students according to their abilities, and establishing on- and off-campus internship and practice bases, a broad practical platform has been established to enhance students' sense of innovation and application ability. In order to meet the needs of the talent market after China's accession to the WTO, some of the courses adopt the original English textbooks and are taught bilingually. Graduates of the Department of Life Sciences can enter colleges and universities, research institutes, environment, health, epidemic prevention departments and biological, pharmaceutical, food and other high-tech companies, enterprises; can enter colleges and universities and scientific research units to continue to further their studies in various specialties of life sciences.
