History of Development

1947~1959

Beginning a new era in the chemical and electronics industries, the foundation was laid for the chemical and electrical-electronic industries that are the two pillars of the LG Group today. (In 1945, when Korea had just been liberated from Japanese colonial rule, and capitalism was beginning to sprout, the industrial field was still a blank slate.) The founder of the LG Group, Yeonan Goo In-hui, established the Lok Hee Chemical Industry Company (now LG Chemical) in 1947, and the history of the LG Group began to be written on this impoverished land.

The LG Group began its business activities by producing the cosmetic product, "Roxy Cream". LG Group entered the plastics industry for the first time in Korea by developing unbreakable cosmetic bottle caps. This decision was made at a time when the Korean War broke out in 1952, and the LG Group was unable to expand its business without an indomitable will and strong corporate spirit. The LG Group has contributed to the improvement of living standards by producing plastic products such as combs, soap boxes, toothbrushes, and cutlery, etc. In 1954, the LG Group successfully developed Korea's first toothpaste with its own technology, and quickly captured Korea's market share by defeating the U.S.-based Colgate Toothpaste, which was the first toothpaste to be produced in Korea. "In 1954, LG Group successfully developed Korea's first toothpaste with its own technology, and it quickly captured the Korean domestic market, contributing to the improvement of the nation's health, and in 1959, LG Group established Lakhee Oils and Fats and started the production of soap and glycerin. Meanwhile, in the process of expanding the field of the plastics industry, the LG Group established Goldstar (LG Electronics) in 1958 and produced Korea's first radio in 1959, ushering in a new era in the Korean electronics industry. With this, the LG Group laid the foundation for the chemical and electrical electronics industries, the two pillars of its corporate activities, in the 1950s, and played a leading role in the development of Korean industry.

1960~1969

Constructed the basic industrial field, established the Hunan Refinery (now GSCaltex), normalized the electronics and electrical industries, and began to participate in the service industry and social welfare. (At this time, Korea was in a period of social unrest and poverty due to political events such as the April 19th Movement and the May 16th Revolution.) With the implementation of the economic development program, the foundation for development was strengthened and Korea began to move into the ranks of developing countries. At the same time, the LG Group continued to expand its chemical and electrical and electronic industries, laying the groundwork for its entry into the group of companies, and in 1962 established Korea Cable Industry (now LG Cable) to expand its electrical and electronic industries. In 1967, LG Group established Korea's first privately owned oil refinery, Hunan Refinery (now GSCaltex), to enter the basic raw materials industry, laying the foundation for its entry into the heavy chemical industry. In addition, LG Chem (now LG Chem) produced Korea's first synthetic detergent, HAITAI, in 1964, and kitchen detergent and liquid shampoo, SHAMPOO, in 1967.

Goldstar (now LG Electronics) was the first company in Korea to produce electric fans, refrigerators, black-and-white televisions, air-conditioners, washing machines, and elevators in 1960, 1964, 1966, 1968, and 1969, respectively, and its sales exceeded the KRW 10 billion mark, a 239-fold leap in just 10 years after the founding of the company. Thus, LG Group was among the leading Korean companies in the chemical, energy, electrical and electronics industries, and ushered in the promising 1970s.

1970~1979

Solidly developing and continuously expanding its business fields, LG's solid management contributed to the recovery and rapid development of the Korean economy during the recession and stepped into the ranks of the top companies. (In the 1970s, Korea entered the ranks of emerging industrialized nations through an export-led policy that fueled rapid economic growth.)

However, the 1970s experienced two world oil crises, coupled with Korea's domestic political turmoil, which worsened the business environment.

The 1970s were ushered in by the death of LG Group's founder, Chairman Goo In-hui, on December 31, 1969, and the inauguration of Goo Ji-kyung as the second-generation chairman. Upon assuming office, Chairman Goh Ji-kyung said, "The 1970s was a turning point in the internationalization of the LG Group," and decided to establish a solid development policy and internationalization as the main policy for the 1970s. To this end, LG Group designated 1970 and 1971 as the "Years of Management Stabilization" and strengthened a solid management foundation; in 1972, sales of LG Chem (now LG Chem) exceeded 1.1 billion won, and exports amounted to US$5.3 million; exports of electronic products from Goldstar (now LG Electronics) increased by 170% over the previous year; and the Hunan Refinery Company (now LG Electronics) increased its exports of electronic products by 170% over the previous year. (now LG Electronics), the export of electronic products increased by 170% from the previous year; Hunan Refining (now GSCaltex) completed the first and second phases of the expansion project and tripled its production capacity in just three years after the startup of the plant, thus laying the foundation for the development of the main enterprise. At the same time, the LG Group successfully expanded its business from manufacturing to services by taking over the Vanhan Fire & Marine Insurance (now LIG) in 1970 to enter the insurance industry, and by establishing the International Securities Company in 1973 to start its involvement in the securities industry, among other things.

At the same time, the LG Group is committed to contributing its corporate profits to society and has demonstrated a mature corporate image that is close to the people. After Lucky Chemical, Goldstar (1970), Goldstar Communications (1975), Korea Mining & Refining (now LG-Nikko Copper Refining) (1975), Peninsula Corporation (now LG Corporation) (1976), Goldstar Electric (1976), Vanhan Fire (1976), Goldstar Wire (now LG Cable) (1977), Goldstar Electromechanical (1978), and Korea Containerization (1978), the LG Group has expanded into the service sector with the establishment of the LG Group. In 1973, the LG Group established Yeonam College, a school corporation, and began its activities to serve the society through education.

It can be said that in the 1970s, the LG Group developed into a national company and established a mature corporate image by expanding its business fields and serving the society through solid development.

1980~1989

The era of internationalization and development of high-end technologies

LG Ice Cream Mobile Phone

In the field of chemistry and energy, the LG Group, centering on the petrochemical industry, which was the main focus of Lok Hee (now LG Chem) after 1983, continued to deepen and develop its existing fields such as plastics, household products, and precision chemistry, and We have diversified our business fields by re-entering the cosmetics industry, expanding the synthetic industry, entering the pharmaceutical business, and becoming a multinational corporation through active overseas investment. Meanwhile, Hunan Refining (now GSCaltex) completed the construction of a 120,000-ton per year polypropylene (PP) plant and a 450,000-ton per year bromine (BTX) plant in 1988, and started construction of a 200,000-ton per year TPA plant to diversify its petrochemical business. In the electrical and electronics field, the LG Group led the development of high-end products such as color TVs, VCRs, and computers in the 1980s, and focused its investment in the semiconductor business, leading the era of high-end technology. At the same time, Goldstar Semiconductor developed the Korean-type standard switchboard, which broke new ground in the Korean communications business. Goldstar Electric Wire (now LG Cable) led the qualitative transformation of the cable business by rapidly realizing the transition from copper to optical communications and from ordinary wires to ultra-high-voltage special wires.

At the same time, Lucky Gold Star Corporation (now LG Corporation) further enhanced its image as a general trading company by achieving the highest export growth rate for two consecutive years since 1983, with sales of 2 trillion won and exports of 3 billion dollars in 1988, while the LG Group established LGAd in 1984 and started to enter the general advertising business and took over Korean Wire in 1987. In 1987, it took over KoreaExpress (now LGCard) and established STM (now LGCNS) to enter into the business field specializing in credit cards and computer systems.

In anticipation of the 40th anniversary of the founding of the LG Group in 1987, the LG Group completed the Yoido LG Twin Towers, further enhancing the overall image of the group. Subsequently, LG Group ushered in the 1990s by implementing the "F-88 Program" and the "V Program," formulating a blueprint for long-term development, and resolutely implementing corporate reforms.

The company was renamed LG, and began to challenge the world's top companies by focusing on the four major industries of chemicals and energy, electronics and information communications, finance, and services. (In 1990, Chairman Gus Kyung issued the "21st Century Management Concept" based on the reform of organizational structure and operation system, self-discipline management and human resource development, and the "Value Creation for Customers, Human-Centered Management" policy. In 1995, the LG Group launched a series of CI revisions, including changing its name to LG, in order to create a distinctive corporate image and start the engine of globalization. After Mr. Goh Ji-kyung, Mr. Goh Ben-mo became the third chairman of the LG Group and started a new era of the LG Group, which was the second battle of management innovation.

Since assuming the presidency of LG, Mr. Goh has made "proper management" and "superb LG" the core of his management, and has achieved the vertical serialization of the petrochemical field, developed a number of high-end pharmaceutical products, and expanded the oil refining business into a comprehensive energy business, LG has achieved a series of impressive results, including the development of various multimedia and digital products, securing the world's power in information and communications technology, entering the Internet and online shopping business field, and entering the global market.

Even when the financial crisis at the end of 1997 paralyzed Korea's economy, the LG Group became a role model for Korean companies as it pushed ahead with corporate restructuring based on the basic principles of "selection and concentration.

The LG Group has established a "21st century business structure" centered on the four business fields of chemicals and energy, electronics and information and communications, finance, and services, and has begun to move toward a "Super LG" vision that will lead the "digital age" of the new millennium.
