University Park Campus
The University Park Campus is located in the West Adams neighborhood of South Los Angeles, about two miles south of downtown Los Angeles. The campus is bounded by Jefferson Boulevard to the north and northeast, Figueroa Street to the southeast, Exposition Boulevard to the south, and Vermont Avenue to the west. In the 1960s, vehicular traffic through the campus was prohibited, and the University Park campus is located within walking distance of Los Angeles landmarks such as the Shrine Auditorium, Staples Center, and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The campus was a great location for filmmakers, with scenes from Harvard University and the University of California at Berkeley being filmed here. Most of the buildings are Romanesque, although some of the buildings, such as the dormitories, the engineering school, and the physical science labs, are modern (especially the two rough-hewn dormitories on the north side of the campus), which contrasts with most of the red-brick buildings on the campus, as well as the beautiful campus views that contrast with the downtown area outside the campus.
USC has continually improved the environment around its two campuses, and in 2000 was selected by Time Magazine as the College of the Year, as well as receiving the Princeton Review's extensive social service program for colleges and universities. About half of the undergraduates volunteer in community service programs that extend from their immediate surroundings throughout Los Angeles.
Organization
USC is a private university governed by a Board of Supervisors, consisting of approximately 50 voting members along with several executive, emeritus, and non-voting retired members. Voting members of the Board of Supervisors serve five-year terms, with one-fifth of the seats reelected each year, and only non-voting members may vote. The Board of Trustees is composed mostly of senior executives of large organizations (both national and international), distinguished alumni, and top university administrators, or a combination of all three.
