Shunting work is divided into traction shunting and shunting according to equipment.

According to the different equipment used, shunting work can be divided into two types: lead-out shunting and hump shunting.

Plane wire drawing. Basically, it is on a smooth road. When shunting, the driving force of vehicle is the thrust of shunting locomotive. The pull-out line is located at the rear of the yard, which is suitable for train formation operation.

The railway hump is named after the camel's hump back. When shunting, the driving force of the vehicle is mainly its own gravity, supplemented by the thrust of the shunting locomotive. Hump is generally located at the head of the yard, which is suitable for train disintegration.

With the rapid development of national economy and the continuous expansion of railway network, the transportation task of marshalling station is increasingly heavy and the production management is increasingly complex, so it is urgent to continuously improve and update technical equipment and operation organization.

The comprehensive automation of marshalling station operation is the goal of continuous efforts and improvement in various countries. The comprehensive automation system of marshalling station includes the automation of all operation processes in the station from train arrival to departure, as well as the automation of information collection, operation planning and transmission of freight cars.

The whole system can be divided into two parts: operation control system and information processing system. The control system is a system in which the electronic computer controls the train arrival and departure, shunting operation route, shunting speed and rolling speed of freight cars in real time through basic equipment (yard, signal, locomotive equipment, weight measuring, length measuring, speed measuring, resistance measuring and speed regulating tools).

The task of the information processing system is to compile the basic plan and operation plan of the station by computer, and transmit and publish these plans.

At the same time, it is necessary to track the existing vehicles in the parking lot, and store the information and running results of the existing vehicles on each track in the parking lot in the corresponding files of the computer at any time for easy reference. The information system also needs to exchange and send pre-confirmation reports with adjacent marshalling stations through teletypewriter, and fill in, sort out and statistically analyze the goods reports.
