Another smart ring is here, and the Movano Ring is a unique idea

As CES 2022 approaches, some new hardware from small teams is starting to make its mark. Health tech company Movano has announced the Movano Ring, a wearable device that can be worn on the finger, similar to the Oura Ring smart ring.

It looks like it's made for fashion.

It's slimmer and smaller than other smart rings, and comes in a variety of styles and colors, making it perfect for women looking for a unique style. Its competitors, the Oura Ring and Motiv Ring, are designed more for men.

The Oura Ring

It also looks like it's designed for health monitoring.

Similar to other smart wearables, it can measure almost all of the basic health metrics, including heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), sleep, respiration, temperature, blood oxygen levels, steps, calories burned, and more.

Plenty of wearables offer similar data, but Movano offers health data that's easier for us to digest.

Looking at the app interface shown on the website, it shows not the raw physical data captured by the device, but the interrelationships between the distilled data.

For example, over time, after a period of learning, it might tell the wearer how exercise habits affect sleep quality or heart rate variability.

Instead of passively listing data, Movano takes a more proactive approach to interpreting the meaning of the data, which in turn helps the wearer adopt healthy lifestyle and exercise habits that reduce the risk of chronic disease.

It's not just about recognizing data, it's about seeing data.

Integrating fashion and technology is a constant theme in wearables.

With sensor sizes getting smaller, making smart wearables smaller may not be such a big deal. And Movano Ring is leading the way. As Movano Ring boasts:

It reminds us of the days when the Misfit Shine first appeared - is the era of stylish smart wearables back?

And when it comes to techiness, Movano believes that capturing the body's signals and turning them into insights is more effective than lists, graphs, and percentages.

The Movano Ring isn't expected to be available until the second half of 2022, and while it seems immature, and Movano is seeking medical clearance from the FDA, it's a novel idea for a product design, especially the part that taps into the value of health data.
