Why does medical waste need special treatment?

Medical waste mainly refers to disposable used medical devices, which are wastes with direct or indirect infectious, toxic and other hazardous properties generated by medical institutions in medical treatment, prevention, health care and other related activities, specifically including infectious, pathological, injurious, pharmaceutical and chemical wastes, including disposable plastic syringes, infusion sets, blood transfusion sets, blood bags and so on. These wastes contain a large number of bacterial viruses, which are dozens or even thousands of times that of domestic waste. And there is a certain space pollution, acute viral infection and latent infection characteristics, such as not to strengthen the management, randomly discarded, allowed to be mixed into the living garbage, dispersed into people's living environment, will contaminate the atmosphere, water, land, as well as plants and animals, resulting in the spread of disease, a serious danger to human physical and mental health.

At present, medical waste is mainly handled professionally by the relevant departments. However, we also encounter the problem of medical waste in our lives, for example, we may treat wounds, injections or bandages at home by ourselves. Then, how to deal with used cotton swabs, gauze, syringes, medicines and so on becomes a problem we need to face. If these things are not handled well, and casually thrown together with household garbage will inevitably cause pollution to the environment, and in serious cases, they may become the source of infection of certain diseases. Therefore, after the use of these things to be wrapped in a sealed plastic bag, sent to a specialized recycling department, or sent to the hospital or clinic dump site, try to avoid throwing away. The same should be true for expired medicines.
