The so-called ghost town is probably the kind of deserted and dilapidated houses we see when we watch a certain scene in a horror movie. Detroit is the largest city in the U.S. state of Michigan. It was once the leader of the automobile industry, the capital of music, and it's also a major port city. Why do people call it a ghost town?
In fact, as early as the 1960s and 1970s, Detroit experienced a recessionary situation, with a growing number of black residents, many merchants and homeowners moving away, and a large number of homes being abandoned. In 1967, the most destructive race riot in the United States was the Detroit Black Riot. There was a recent movie Detroit about this event. And drug crimes went up because they often used abandoned houses as drug strongholds, so the government razed those houses.
Detroit's status as an automotive center began to be shaken in the 1980s, when racial tensions and high taxes led to an exodus of people, and the automotive industry grew in other countries, leaving Detroit with little competitive advantage. 2013 saw Detroit declare bankruptcy, and then a year later declare itself out of bankruptcy. The economy is slowly picking up again. Now, the city of Detroit elects a mayor, and it's saddening that half of the people running are former felons. in 2017 an American website voted the city of Detroit as the worst city to live in.
The Detroit government should re-plan the economic construction and city planning, to change while it's still possible, or the ghost city will follow Detroit for a long time. In fact, not only Detroit, there are many cities facing this problem, brain drain, lack of new economic growth. So city leaders need to plan for the future of their cities based on the specifics of the situation.
