Notes on snorkeling in the Maldives!
Most people snorkeling in the Maldives will be around the hotel islands, because of the one-island-one-hotel feature and the low density of tourists compared to the size of each island, and because there are almost no lifeguards on the beaches of the hotel islands, so it's very important to pay attention to your own snorkeling safety!
The following is a reminder of the precautions that should be taken when snorkeling:
Before snorkeling
1. Pay attention to the weather conditions, cloudy, rainy, or windy weather is not suitable for snorkeling because the waves mainly come from the wind, and the winds on cloudy or rainy days are usually stronger and the temperatures are lower. Strong winds and waves make snorkeling very uncomfortable and can affect physical fitness. In addition, the low temperature will also cause discomfort.
2. Before snorkeling, please go to Diving center to know more about the sea conditions and currents of the resort, usually you should ask about the time of high tide, low tide, suitable area for snorkeling, and the nearby currents.
3. If the hotel provides snorkeling instruction course, please make sure to attend it. Swimming and snorkeling have different breathing methods (swimming is to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth; snorkeling is to breathe in and out through the mouth through a snorkel), so don't take snorkeling lightly just because you're a good swimmer.
4. Unless you have learned to snorkel and dive (diving with your breath closed is a more advanced snorkeling technique), you should wear a lifejacket for safety.
5. Pay attention to the direction of the current, it is best to go into the water against the current, so that when you come back to the current, you can save energy; because when you come back, you usually have less energy, and if you encountered a counter-current is bound to accelerate the exhaustion of energy, which will increase the danger.
6. Please think about what to do in case of emergency (e.g. drowning, rafting). And whether you have the ability to rescue them?
7. When choosing a snorkeling spot, consider that there are other people nearby or people passing by, so that it is easier to get help in case of an emergency.
8. Regardless of whether you can swim or not, please prepare yourself with buoyant aids such as life jackets, rafts, or winter jackets.
9. The three treasures of snorkeling (goggles, snorkel, and flippers) are indispensable. Generally, people may overlook the importance of flippers, which can actually provide strong thrust to generate buoyancy easily and save energy.
10. Snorkeling should be done in pairs, so that you can take care of each other when something happens.
11. Please check the tightness of the mask (not too loose or too tight), whether the mask is easy to get into the water (there should not be anything between the mask and your face, even hair will cause the mask to get into the water; sunscreen on your face will also cause the mask to get into the water because of its poor adsorptive power), whether the snorkeling hose is easy to get into the water, whether the flippers are comfortable, and adjust the equipments to the optimal condition.
When snorkeling
1. Keep your head up at all times and pay attention to the surrounding conditions, including the distance from the shore, weather conditions, and the presence of boats, watercraft, and snorkelers nearby.
2. When you enter the current zone, please leave as soon as possible so as not to exhaust yourself or be carried away from the shore by the current. In order to save energy, it is better to swim at an oblique angle downstream.
3. Simple mirror drainage: When the mirror is in the water during snorkeling, press the upper edge of the mirror with both fingers and breathe through your nose, and the water will drain out of the lower part of the mirror. Please practice in the shallows first.
4. Simple snorkel drainage: When the snorkel is filled with water, blow hard and fast to drain the water out. In addition, some of the better designed snorkels have drain valves and check valves, which can effectively reduce the amount of seawater entering the snorkel.
5. The snorkeling time is recommended to be limited to one hour to avoid overstretching. Wear a waterproof watch to keep track of the time.
6. In case of physical exhaustion, drifting, or drowning, please tell yourself to stay calm, and only by staying calm will you be able to save yourself and call for help. The sea is very buoyant and if you can keep moving with your legs in a vertical pedaling motion, you won't sink for no reason
7. When an emergency occurs, please call for help immediately and assess whether you have the ability to rescue yourself, and try to bring along a flotation device when you go to the rescue. If both of you are already in deep water, please make sure to evaluate your own rescue ability first, do not rescue them hastily. If you do not have the ability to rescue yourself, please call for help from others first, and pass the buoyant equipment to the drowning person.
