Countries generally require the equipment of the standard pistol to be accurate, effective, reliable, easy to repair and maintenance.

However, different countries have different requirements for military pistols at different times.

For example, when the U.S. Army issued a call for bids for a new pistol in 2015, it required the new gun to be modular, but also to fit different sized hand shapes, be a non-reflective neutral color, and be able to add a target indicator to the tactical rail, among other things.

The safety trigger and magazine catch are "humanized" and can be used by both right and left hands; the illuminated door and collimator are set with fluorescent dots for easy night-time aiming; the bottom handle is equipped with a sight interface slot, which allows the installation of laser sights and tactical lights.

Its improved version, the M9A1, was finalized in 2003, adding a rail that can be fitted with universal tactical attachments. 2010 saw the P226 semiautomatic pistol formally deployed in the U.S. Navy's Special Warfare Division, featuring single- and double-action firing, a short-travel recoil mode of action in a breech-locking barrel, and a hard-oxidized aluminum bottom handle.
