Lombardy's economy
Lombardia is the most important region among the 20 Italian regions, accounting for 20% of Italy's GDP (3% of the EU), 30% of Italy's total exports and 40% of Italy's total imports. There are 750,000 registered enterprises, 800 foreign multinational companies (500 of which are in Milan) and diplomatic institutions 103 (Milan). Lombardy occupies a leading position in the manufacture of machinery and equipment in textile, plastics, machine tools, leather, agriculture and food industries. UCIMU, Italy's largest machine tool and robot manufacturing association, is headquartered near Milan, and 54% of Italy's textile equipment production comes from lombardia. The headquarters of the Textile Machinery Manufacturing Association is also in Milan.
