Dr. Chen Chou-ping: In Medicine and in Art

Dr. Chen Chou-Ping, MD: A Doctor as well as an Artist Dr. Chen Chou-Ping, MD may be remembered as one of the top 100 doctors in the world, a giant in eugenics research, or an expert in amniocentesis, but did you know he is also an artist? But did you know that he is also a painter? Since 2013, Dr. Chen has published eight books of paintings in just three years, with material ranging from religion, architecture, eroticism, landscapes, and even poems and songs. This time, he was interviewed by Baby & Mother magazine to share his fascinating life as a medical practitioner as well as an artist.

Chen Chou-ping, vice president of MHI, is a master in the field of genetic eugenics, having founded the MHI eugenics sub-specialty and established the Genetic Counseling Center, and having published hundreds of academic papers. However, he says that the reason why he entered the eugenics field in the first place was because he was "driven to the shelf". How? He recalls that at that time, the Makai Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was actively developing subspecialties, and the director of the department, Lee Yi-Nan, assigned him, Soo Chung-Hsien, Lee Kuo-Guang, and others to be in charge of setting up subspecialties in different areas, and the one that he was assigned to was reproductive health care. "At that time, the mainstream research in Obstetrics and Gynecology was on women's cancer and IVF, and the program I was responsible for was relatively unknown. I told the director that I wanted to do IVF, but I didn't realize that he had already assigned Lee Kwok-kwong to do it, so I had to go back to doing fertility care," Chen recalled. The company's main goal is to provide the best possible service to its customers," he said. "The company's main goal is to provide the best possible service to its customers," he said.

Talking about the current state of obstetrics and gynecology, "turning a crisis into an opportunity"

In recent years, obstetrics and gynecology has become a member of the medical profession's "Big Five," which has made Chen Chi-ping very emotional. He said that when he first joined Makai, "internal and external gynecology" was the dominant study, and obstetricians and gynecologists had a very high social status, so they were a group of residents who cherished their internships, and told themselves that they would have to survive even if they had to suffer. On the contrary, due to the low payment and long working hours of obstetricians and gynecologists, they often have to rush to hospitals to deliver babies, but they are often sued, which makes many residents "run away" in less than two years, and there are also small doctors who aspire to never deliver babies for fear of being sued. Speaking of this phenomenon, Chen Chi-ping said bluntly, "If you don't dare to deliver a baby, don't come to Obstetrics and Gynecology! He emphasized that since you are in OB/GYN, you have to be prepared to face medical disputes, and that unless you are doing research or teaching for the rest of your life, you will definitely have to deliver babies. "The newest addition to the list is the newest addition to the list, the newest addition to the list, the newest addition to the list.

Chen Zhiping pointed out that Obstetrics and Gynecology has the learning of internal medicine and surgical techniques, is an internal and external discipline, coupled with a number of specialties can be done to research, which will help to fully appreciate the skills and knowledge related to medicine, can be said to be a treasure trove of physicians. With the lack of manpower in OB/GYN and the shortage of demand, it is a good time for rookie doctors to make their mark. As long as the reputation and personal brand, once established in the industry, the future can be attacked and defended, even if their own practice is not afraid of no patients. Medical students should not be deterred from practicing obstetrics and gynecology because of environmental factors, but should "turn a crisis into an opportunity".

Creative power is amazing, and the accumulation of thousands of paintings in 3 years

When I entered the office of Chen Zhaoping, in addition to the stacks of medical journals and research reports, the most eye-catching is the paintings hanging on the wall," he said. The first time I saw a picture of a man in a room, he said, "It's my grandfather's generation," he said. Chen's grandfather, Chen Kaiquan, studied under Liu Haisu, a master of Chinese painting, and after graduating from the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, worked as an art teacher at a middle school, where he was also a classmate of the master Li Keran, while his father, Chen Zuru, was an accomplished calligrapher. Perhaps as a result of his family background, Chen Jiping showed a remarkable artistic talent from an early age, and his drawings of organ anatomy during medical school were even more lifelike. However, he stopped painting after entering a busy obstetrics and gynecology department, and only returned to painting in 2013 when he hit a low point in his life. In the three years since then, he has amassed thousands of paintings and published eight books of his paintings, an astonishingly prolific output.

Diversified themes include nuns and naked women

Chen's paintings are impressive at first glance. His paintings are full of vitality and one can feel his passion for life. The themes of his paintings are all-encompassing, ranging from nuns praying with devotion to nude women filled with desire. Among the thousands of paintings, the most special one is entitled "Blood of the Bullfighter". At the first sight of "The Blood of Bullfighting", one can only feel the red color coming from the sky, the red sun, the red bulls, and the red bullfighting cloths, all three of which merge into a gush of blood, as if it will break through the paper and overflow at any time, and in strong contrast to it is a deep blue audience like the ocean. He said that the prototype of this painting was originally a blue cup, and then halfway through the painting, he found that the shape of the cup inverted like a curved auditorium, he had the idea to add the bullfighting, matadors and the sun, and it took only half an hour to complete the bullfighting scene that you see now. People can not help but marvel at his rich associative power.

Self-healing through art and giving back to others through creativity

During the three years he has been painting, Chen has been able to crystallize in his paintings the transitions he has experienced in his life. As his state of mind changed, his painting skills also grew. He admits that every time he completes a painting, he shares it with his family and friends. The encouragement from his friends and family has helped him to build up confidence in his work, and has helped him to emerge from the low points of his life with more motivation to meet the challenges of the future, which he sees as the perfect embodiment of art as medicine. He said, "Art is medicine, medicine is art" Art can help people gain the power of peace, release negative emotions, and has a powerful healing effect. Not only do people get satisfaction from creating, but they also get pleasure from appreciating the creations of others. "When you look at a painting, you are also interacting with the creator, and when the creator's state of mind coincides with yours, you will **** with the painting and be healed," he says. Because of this, he says, he uses art to heal himself and to bring joy to others by sharing his creations.

However, many people face the dilemma of not knowing where to start when it comes to art therapy. Some people think in front of a blank sheet of paper, but they just don't know what to draw. In response, Chen says, "You don't have to think too much about drawing! He says that the purpose of painting is to make oneself happy, so there is no need to set limits on what to paint. He never makes any sketches for his paintings, and most of the time, he just "follows his heart" and paints whatever comes to his mind, "so as to reflect the true nature of his heart. "This is the only way to reflect the true feelings of the heart!

Practicing art and medicine starts at school

In addition to self-healing through painting, Chen also plans to further develop the power of art and medicine outward. He said, observing the patients coming and going in the hospital, we can find that whether they are registering, seeing the doctor or getting medicine, they are waiting most of the time. If hospitals can provide a platform for art appreciation, so that people can take advantage of the waiting time to enjoy the paintings, not only can calm their nervousness and anxiety, but also enhance the therapeutic effect. He plans to set up a course on art and medicine in MHMS in the future, and to cooperate with teachers from foreign art schools to hold exhibitions in hospitals, providing a platform for doctors who like to paint to create, so that more people can appreciate the goodness of art and medicine.

Chen Chou-ping projects his inner self into his paintings, and his paintings show no traces of elegance, only the most genuine emotions and passion for life. Painting from the heart, he is able to navigate between art and medicine, truly embodying the spirit of both medicine and art.
