Founded in 1997, it was once an online DVD and Blu-ray rental provider that allowed users to rent and return physical discs of a large number of movies from Netflix's inventory via free delivery envelopes.

Global streaming giant Netflix has signed its first licensing deal in China with Aqiyi, according to U.S. media outlet Variety.
Robert Roy, vice president of streaming services at Netflix, made the announcement on the sidelines of the annual APOS conference in Indonesia.Variety cited a Netflix spokesperson as saying that it was a new deal and could not provide more details, such as when Netflix content would debut in the Chinese market.
Netflix has previously tried to enter the Chinese market as a service operator, but there has been too much regulatory resistance. In its earnings call for the third quarter of late 2011, the company said that applying for a license could be the path to China.
Aqiyi, an independent video site owned by Baidu, claims more than 500 million monthly users. Aqiyi is also launching original content to steer users toward a Netflix-like subscription model.
On November 30, 2017, Netflix bought the rights to broadcast "White Night Chase".
