The establishment of UL
In the 1890s, a major fire occurred in the United States. The culprit was electricity. The cause of the accident was that people were using more and more unused power. Tested electrical connections and electrical products.
In order to prevent further tragedies from happening, Mr. William H. Merrill formally established the Electrical Protection Bureau in 1894, which later became the National Fire Protection Board Electrical Bureau. Starting with only two employees and testing equipment worth $350, UL published its first testing report on March 24, 1894, beginning its career in defending safety.
In 1901, the Electrical Bureau formed the Protective Testing Company and expanded its operations beyond the electrical field.
