What is the oxygen index?

The oxygen index is not less than 32.

The oxygen index (P/F) is a goal in respiratory therapy, and is an important index that allows organs and tissues to have access to enough oxygen for oxygenation for energy.

Oxygen index (P/F): PaO2/FiO2, where PaO2 is the partial pressure of arterial blood oxygen and FiO2 is the percent concentration of inhaled oxygen.

Tests for oxygen index:

Specimen specifications, depending on the type of material being tested, six different specimen specifications exist. For injection molded materials, it is recommended to use specimens that are 80 to 120 mm long, 10 mm wide and 4 mm thick. Only if the test specimens are of the same size can the results of different materials be compared with each other.

The test is performed by holding the specimen vertically in a glass combustion cylinder, the base of which is connected to a device that generates a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen. The top of the specimen is ignited and the oxygen concentration in the gas mixture decreases until the flame is extinguished.
