What are some of the finer details of Grand Theft Auto's worldview?

In GTA4, once confronted the police, killed 4 stars, drove all over the city followed by countless police cars and helicopters, then turned onto the street where I was going home, so jumped out of the car and ran in the door, and a bunch of cops followed me in, and then I laid down on the bed, and the cops very politely retreated, and slammed the door in the process.
