The six techniques of battlefield rescue are:
1. Initial assessment of the wounded (Triage):
On the battlefield, there are many wounded but limited rescue resources. Therefore, the initial assessment of the wounded is crucial. Medical responders need to quickly assess the severity of the casualty's injuries and categorize them as slightly, moderately, or severely wounded to prioritize treatment. Those with minor injuries can wait for treatment, while those with moderate and serious injuries need to be prioritized.
2. Hemostasis:
On the battlefield, casualties may lose a lot of blood due to trauma. Hemostasis techniques include direct pressure on hemostasis points, use of tourniquets, and filling with hemostatic agents. By mastering different methods of hemostasis, medics can quickly control the bleeding of the wounded and increase their chances of survival.
3. Artificial respiration and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR):
When the casualty stops breathing or suffers a cardiac arrest, the healthcare worker needs to perform artificial respiration and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. These techniques involve proper breathing techniques and cardiac compressions to maintain the vital signs of the casualty until he or she is transported to a medical facility for further care.
4. Field Surgery:
Field Surgery is the ability to perform surgery under extreme conditions, often on the battlefield, for severely injured patients who require rapid intervention. Medics need to be able to perform surgeries in rudimentary conditions to control bleeding, debride wounds, and suture wounds to prevent infection and alleviate the suffering of the wounded.
5. Evacuation (Evacuation) Techniques:
Casualties need to be rapidly evacuated from the battlefield to a safe location for further treatment. Evacuation techniques include the use of medical helicopters, armored ambulances, and other means of transport to safely move the casualty from the battlefield to a medical facility for more specialized medical care.
6. Psychological Support:
Casualties on the battlefield may face extreme fear, anxiety, and trauma. Paramedics need to have basic psychological skills to help relieve anxiety, fear, and pain, and provide psychological support.
