One of the big reasons behind overmedication is the hospital's revenue-generating mechanism, in which the hospital overreaches for economic benefits.
It used to take 20 to 30 years for a hospital's interest to grow from tens of millions of dollars to a target of $100 million, whereas by adopting overmedicating, it can make a blowout leap!
Whenever the hospital meets, it talks about how well the targets were met, from $200,000 to $400,000, $800,000, $1.2 million, $1.8 million, $2.4 million.
In addition, the low income of legitimate doctors is also one of the factors of overmedication.
3. Heart stent abuse
A doctor implanted a heart stent with a kickback of at least 2k.
Hu Daiyi, director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases at Peking University People's Hospital, said that the international ratio of stenting and bypass surgery for people with coronary artery disease is 7:1 to 8:1, and in China it is as high as 15:1.
In this regard, Hu Daiyi believes that the misuse of cardiac stents has become the biggest hidden danger for cardiovascular patients. He has also blasted overmedication with the fact that many cardiovascular patients in China carry more than three heart stents.
"I abhor this phenomenon of over-treatment, we waste a lot of money, whether it's money from the state, money from health insurance, money from ourselves, it's a huge waste, and over-medication is not only ineffective, but it can bring very serious consequences."
Hu Daiyi said, now stenting is done too much, which is a very serious problem, in Europe now this kind of stabilization of patients, less than half of the stenting, only more than 40%, China is close to 80%.
Professor Hu Daiyi believes that cardiac stents should never be used indiscriminately in stable patients who can be controlled with drugs.
4. Let's do CT after a few questions, cancer risk increases
Indiscriminate examination is another feature of excessive medical treatment.
Hu Daiyi, director of the heart center at Peking University People's Hospital, said that many doctors now let patients do CT, imaging and MRI immediately after three and a half sentences of consultation.
In fact, these tests are costly and traumatic, and may also increase the risk of cancer. The whole process of seeing a doctor, examination, treatment, medication, we often hear complaints, "this test has been repeated several times" or "this drug is prescribed too much".
