Miscellaneous Poems of the Year 2010 (Part V) Author: Gong Zizhen
The sun is slanting with sorrows, and the whip is pointing to the east, which is the end of the world.
Fallen red is not an unfeeling thing, it is turned into spring mud to protect the flowers.
Translation: The sun is setting in the west, and the whip is pointing to the end of the world. The fading flowers are still sentimental and intentional, and are turned into spring mud to cultivate new flowers.
Appreciation:
Miscellany of Poems of the Heihai ****315. Jihai refers to the Qing Daoguang 19 years (1839), a year before the Opium War, when Gong Zizhen resigned from his post to return to the south, and then went north to meet his family, in the north and south on the way back and forth, write a giant group of poems. This text is selected from the fifth chapter of "Miscellaneous Poems on the Occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Birthday of the Emperor". The author's resignation from the government and his parting from his friends and relatives were so sorrowful that it can be called "a great sadness".
The word "volatile" not only indicates the intensity of the sorrow, but also implies a variety of complex thoughts and feelings, such as dissatisfaction with the society at that time, indignation towards the rulers, and worries about the people's lives, etc. At the same time, we can imagine that the author whisked his sleeve away when he resigned from his post.
"The sun is slanting" means that the author returned to the south with sorrows, because of the sorrows accumulated in his chest, so he felt that the time passed very quickly, and he didn't realize that the sun was already thinning in the west. The fact that the author did not use the word "sunset" but the word "sunset" coincides with the author's mood at that time, and it is also a metaphor for the social reality of the country's gradual deterioration at that time.
"Yin whip" refers to the poet's horsewhip, and "east pointing" points out the destination of this trip - his hometown (Zhejiang). The phrase "the end of the world" means that the distance to the hometown is still very far. From this line, we can imagine: the poet in the evening, standing on the horse, facing the hometown, looking forward to the poem, improvisation, mixed feelings. What is the poet thinking at this time? I want to fall red flowers.
"Falling red" that is, falling flowers, the whole sentence is meant to say that the petals falling from the trees is not a heartless thing, but attached to the surface of the ground, rotting into mud, into the soul of the spirit, nourishing the next year's spring flowers. The author draws a self-comparison from the cyclic law of nature to show that although he has resigned from the government, he will still care about the future destiny of the country.
This philosophical sentence conveys the poet's invaluable spirit of "not in his position, but also to seek his own politics", and demonstrates the poet's unshakable determination, which has become a famous sentence in ancient times, inspiring many people to "old steeds in the stable still, aspiring to thousands of miles".
