Located in the southeastern coastal region of Brazil and bordered by the Atlantic Ocean in the southeast, Rio de Janeiro is the economic center of the country and an important transportation center, with excellent harbors backed by mountains and water.
Rio de Janeiro is the largest commercial center and the second largest industrial city in Brazil. Rio de Janeiro has hosted two World Cups at the Maracana Stadium, Brazil 1950 and Brazil 2014.
Rio de Janeiro is the largest seaport in the Brazilian Federal*** and State and is the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Cultural events
Rio de Janeiro is one of the largest cities in South America, but the city is better known for the wide variety of cultural celebrations that take place throughout the year, most notably Carnaval, which takes place two weeks before the traditional Catholic fasting period of Lent.
Then people from all over the world come to Rio de Janeiro to participate in and witness the revelry. Carnival means big crowds, great food, color, and of course, samba. Carnival celebrations end on "Mardi Gras" Tuesday.
Along with Carnival, New Year's Day is also a major holiday in Rio de Janeiro, with several concerts and fireworks throughout the city, the largest of which is at Copacabana Beach. People dress in white and some dance in honor of Yemaya.
