What to pay attention to after pacemaker surgery, and what to eat for health recovery

After pacemaker implantation, you need to pay attention to:

1, after the operation (within 24h), the patient should lie flat in bed, less activity. Three days after the operation, try to be in bed as good as possible, three days later gradually increase the amount of activity, you can get out of bed to walk, according to their own situation to listen to the doctor's advice, and two times a day for the ward air disinfection.

2. During the first 1-2 weeks after implantation of the pacemaker, the arm on the implanted side should not be lifted up, but you can move your arm slightly (in order to fix the electrodes, we will usually restrain the arm to remind the patient). For three months after implantation, exercise is generally not impeded, and strenuous activities on the implanted arm should be avoided. For the rest of your life, avoid weight-bearing with the arm on the implanted side of the pacemaker. However, strenuous exercise such as marathons or race walking should be avoided. Walking, golf, croquet, or walking in a swimming pool are good choices. Exercises such as push-ups or hanging from the bar that are close to where the pacemaker is implanted should also be avoided. For patients with pacemakers implanted in the abdomen, exercises such as pulling the bar or exercises that may rub or compress the abdomen, such as gymnastics, should be avoided as much as possible.

3. Do not apply direct pressure to your pacemaker. For example, don't try to squeeze or move your pacemaker, and if you're driving, avoid having your seatbelt hit or press on your pacemaker by putting a cushion on it to distribute the pressure.

4, if there is no serious organic heart disease or other disease limitations, buried pacemaker can be discharged from the hospital to resume normal life, work, when shortness of breath do not force, should immediately stop exercise to keep quiet. There is no problem with food or alcohol within the appropriate range, be careful not to overdo it (moderate alcohol consumption does not affect the pacemaker, the pacemaker itself is not affected by diet).

5. Sauna or hot bath has no effect on pacemaker in principle, but if you have serious heart disease (e.g., coronary heart disease without intervention), the high water temperature may be detrimental to you, so please seek your doctor's advice when you are discharged from the hospital or when you are rechecked later.

6. Sexual life does not affect the pacemaker in principle, but is related to the original disease, please seek advice from the doctor in charge.

7. When using a cell phone, make sure that the distance between the phone and your pacemaker is more than 15 centimeters (some pacemakers will not be affected by the use of cell phones due to their intrinsic anti-jamming mechanism), and try to answer the phone with the ear that is farther away from your pacemaker when answering the phone.

8, avoid making magnets close to the pacemaker, including all magnetic therapy fitness equipment. Such as: not close to industrial electromagnetic induction furnace, radar antennas, radio and television transmission antennas in the restricted area, large motors, high-voltage equipment where strong magnetic fields occur, electric saws, weed whackers, mattresses or pillows magnetic therapy device, voltage power transmission lines, power plants in the restricted area, arc welding equipment, industrial magnets; avoid close to the car engine being repaired (in the state of launching), electronic anti-theft device (abnormal) speed passes, such as loitering in doorways or leaning on security gates), gasoline-powered tools, etc. If you feel dizzy or have a rapid irregular heartbeat, quickly move away from the above devices or areas and your pacemaker will soon return to normal.

9. Ensure that all common power sources are grounded and avoid contact with equipment that leaks electricity.

10, driving a motorcycle or riding in a car with severe bumps may have an effect on the frequency-adaptive pacemaker, follow your doctor's advice.

11, pacemaker implantation knowledge manual and pacemaker implantation card should be carried with you as far as possible. In case of an emergency, it will help to send you to the hospital in time to receive timely treatment. At the same time, when you go out to travel and take an airplane, presenting the pacemaker card can exempt you from the security check.

12. Count your pulse every day when you are quiet (especially when you wake up in the morning) and write it down in a notebook. Go to the hospital regularly to test the working condition of the pacemaker. Generally, it is required to follow up once in 1, 3 and 6 months after implantation, and then once every 6 months~1 year, depending on the type of pacemaker and changes in the condition. It is expected that when the pacemaker is approaching the expiration date of its service life, the follow up time must be shortened in order to avoid any adverse consequences. When you experience difficulty breathing, chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, fatigue, swelling of the arms and legs, hiccups, or feel unusually hot, or even faint, or if your pulse pattern changes completely, or if you feel that you are experiencing the same symptoms you had prior to the implantation of the pacemaker, you should contact the physician in charge of the procedure for a checkup.

13. When you go to the hospital, you must tell the doctor that you have a pacemaker (some medical equipment cannot be examined, but some medical equipment may be able to be used after certain precautions have been taken).

As for diet, as you can see, pacemaker implantation is in fact only a minor surgery, and does not require a "big fix" to recuperate, as long as you basically follow your daily diet.
