Disease Screening and Control Program

● On January 14, 2006, the China Primary Health Care Foundation and the Peking University School of Medicine jointly set up the "National Community Disease Prevention and Control Center". The director of the Center is Prof. Ke Yang, Executive Vice President of Peking University and Executive Deputy Director of the Faculty of Medicine. The Center consists of the Tumor Prevention and Control Center, Digestive Disease Prevention and Control Center, Gynecological Disease Prevention and Control Center, Vascular Disease Prevention and Control Center, Diabetes Prevention and Control Center, Pathology Center, and Minimally Invasive and Non-invasive Technology Promotion Center. The main tasks of the center are to advocate and promote community health services, guide rural primary medical institutions to carry out disease screening, and focus on carrying out guidance on the prevention and treatment of common and frequent diseases in the community, especially chronic diseases and malignant tumors.

On April 22 of the same year, the China Primary Health Care Foundation and Peking University's Faculty of Medicine held the "Community Disease Prevention and Control Project Launching Ceremony" in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, with the chairman of the foundation, Mr. Jiang Zhenghua, and Peking University's executive vice-president, Mr. Ke Yang, attending the ceremony and delivering speeches. The establishment of the Community Disease Control Center is a useful attempt for social welfare organizations to join hands with universities to participate in the cause of health poverty alleviation and community disease control by mobilizing the power of the whole society and integrating social resources, and it is a good deed to benefit tens of thousands of people in grassroots communities, especially in the rural areas, for the benefit of the people.

● Funding for the Women's Disease Screening and Treatment Program:

Improving women's health, especially in rural areas, is an important part of realizing the goal of "Primary Health Care for All," and is also an important measure of social equity and progress. There are 343 million women of childbearing age in China and most of them live in rural areas, while 80% of the resources for maternal and child health care in China are concentrated in cities. For a long time, the incidence of cervical cancer and breast cancer, which affect women's health, has been on the rise year by year due to the constraints imposed by economic conditions, traditional attitudes and living habits. The incidence rate of breast cancer in China is increasing by 3%-4% per year, and the incidence rate of cervical cancer accounts for 28.8% of the world's total, which is 6 times higher than that of the developed countries, and it is also showing a trend of rejuvenation. "The two cancers not only threaten women's health and life safety, but also affect the harmony of husband and wife, family happiness, and bring a heavy burden to the state and society.

In 2003, the "China Health Poverty Alleviation Project Organizing Committee (the "Organizing Committee")" under the Foundation began to pay attention to women's health problems in rural areas when it carried out related public welfare activities in rural areas, and listed it as one of the "China Health Poverty Alleviation Project" projects. "In 2004, the Organizing Committee organized a committee of experts to conduct research in the rural areas of Anhui Province and other provinces, and designed a project plan for universal screening and treatment of women's diseases; in 2005, the first pilot project was carried out in Luzhai County, Guangxi Autonomous Region, which was a success; in 2006, on the basis of expanding the scope of the pilot project, a pilot project was formed to promote women's health in rural areas. In 2006, on the basis of expanding the scope of the pilot program, the public welfare activity model of "free screening, low-cost treatment, and assistance for serious illnesses" was formed and promoted nationwide. By the end of 2008, the universal women's disease screening and treatment program had been carried out in 237 counties (cities) in 24 provinces (autonomous regions).

In 2007, the program was selected by the Ministry of Civil Affairs as a public welfare program with outstanding public welfare, great influence, and the ability to bring benefits and relief to the general public, and was released and publicized nationwide.

● Funding the Upper GI Disease Screening Project:

By the end of 2008, the Foundation had carried out the Upper GI Disease Screening Project in 26 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, more than 100 cities and more than 400 counties and municipalities across the country, covering a population of 220 million people; donating 712 million yuan in the value of the screening kits and items; directly funding the operation of the project for more than 3 million yuan; receiving free screening for 4200 million people; and providing free screening for more than 400,000 people. In addition, more than 42 million people received free screening; more than 1.1 million cases of upper gastrointestinal diseases were detected; more than 210,000 cases of pre-cancerous diseases were detected; more than 6,200 cases of cancer were detected; and more than 1 million yuan was provided for the treatment of patients with tumors, of which 590,000 yuan was provided for the treatment of 580 patients with early-stage cancers. For this reason, the people's governments of more than 300 counties (cities and districts) have given the Foundation banners and souvenirs to express their gratitude, and dozens of media outlets have reported on it.
