Is negative pressure drainage the same as gastrointestinal decompression

Negative pressure drainage is not the same as gastrointestinal decompression. Negative pressure drainage is a medical procedure that removes fluids, gases, or slurries from the body through the use of a negative pressure device. Negative pressure drainage can be used in cases of surgical incisions, wounds, and abscesses to promote healing, reduce the risk of infection, and remove exudate from the body. Gastrointestinal Decompression is a procedure used to reduce pressure within the gastrointestinal tract. It is usually accomplished by inserting a gastrointestinal decompression tube (also known as a gastric or intestinal tube). Gastrointestinal decompression can be used for purposes such as passing gas, reducing gastrointestinal motility, and reducing flatulence. Another important function of a decompression tube is to alleviate situations of increased pressure due to upper gastrointestinal obstruction or fluid buildup in the gastrointestinal tract by draining fluids and gases from the stomach.
