What are IEEE standards?

IEEE was formed on January 1, 1963 by the merger of AIEE (American Institute of Electrical Engineers) and IRE (American Institute of Radio Engineers), and is the largest professional society in the U.S. IEEE is a not-for-profit scientific and technical society with more than 360,000 members in nearly 175 countries worldwide. Through its diverse membership, the organization is a leading authority in the fields of space, computers, telecommunications, biomedicine, power, and consumer electronics. IEEE publishes nearly 30 percent of the world's literature in the fields of electrical and electronic engineering, computers, and control technology, and sponsors or co-sponsors more than 300 technical conferences each year.

Purpose Since its founding, the IEEE has been dedicated to advancing the theory and application of electrical technology. As a catalyst for scientific and technological innovation, the IEEE supports the needs of its members through the planning of activities and services in a wide range of fields. It promotes the exchange of science, technology, and information in technical fields ranging from computer engineering, biomedicine, and communications to power, aerospace, and user electronics; conducts education and training; develops and recommends standards for electrical and electronic technology; and awards members for scientific and technological achievements.

Institutions The Society is led by a President (currently Mr. W. Cleon Anderson) and an Executive Committee***. Decisions on important matters are made by the Council and the General Assembly, while day-to-day matters are carried out by the Executive Committee. The Society has four committees on Superconductivity, Intelligent Transportation Systems, Neural Networks and Sensors and 38 specialized sub-societies, such as Power Engineering, Aerospace and Electronic Systems, Computing, Communications, Broadcasting, Circuits and Systems, Control Systems, Electronic Devices, Electromagnetic Compatibility, Industrial Electronics, Information Theory, Engineering Management, Microwave Theory and Techniques, Nuclear and Plasma Science, Ocean Engineering, Power Electronics, Reliability, user electronics, etc. The Society is also organized into 10 regions,*** with more than 300 local chapters. The Delegate Assembly consists of delegates from 10 regional societies and 10 technical divisions. The IEEE Beijing Section was established in 1985.

IEEE members enjoy the following benefits: members can communicate with each other for information *** enjoy; exclusive access to special cost savings and value-added benefits; recognition and awards for members' technical and professional accomplishments; opportunities to participate in, lead, or volunteer to assist in a variety of IEEE activities; and e-commerce through web services and between IEEEs.

IEEE standards are developed for electrical and electronic equipment, test methods, original devices, symbols, definitions, and test methods.

Publications IEEE Journal (monthly), IEEE Magazine (monthly), IEEE Review (monthly), IEEE Guide (published annually); there are also more than 800 issued or in the process of development of a variety of standards; the professional sub-societies also publish a variety of journals and magazines and conference proceedings.
